Making his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut for its franchise Rising Pune Supergiant-led by Steven Smith, in the recently concluded tenth edition of the Twenty20 competition, the 17-year-old bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar, is aiming to perform and give his all-round best in the forthcoming Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL).
“The IPL stint was more than just learning,” Sundar was quoted as saying by TOI.
The rookie slow-ball all-rounder Sundar has been a prominent face, as he picked eight wickets in the maiden stint of his IPL in 11 matches at an average of 23.12.
“If I could prepare well, I know I can do well in matches and the results will come good,” Sundar added.
In the span of a year, the lanky bowler Sundar has worked hard, in order to prepare himself for the domestic fixtures to improve as a bowler and a batsman before participating in the upcoming TNPL which is beginning from July 22.
Sundar has praised the efforts of his IPL team members while revealing he was delighted to share the dressing room with the likes of Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Australian skipper Steven Smith, adding it has been a learning curve for him during the 20-over competition.
“I got to share the dressing room for 11 matches with great leaders such as Dhoni and Smith and got valuable inputs from them,” Sundar maintained.
Sundar, who is focusing on basics as a professional, further went on to say that he is confident of doing well as a player and there is no extra pressure to perform in the TNPL.
“Pressure is there, but there is no added pressure. I know I can do well,” Sundar further said.
Sundar will be part of the defending champions Albert Tuti Patriots which is scheduled to play the opener of the second edition of the TNPL against Dindigul Dragons in Chennai, after successful first edition.
While talking about his rapid rise, Sundar revealed he believes his preparations are up to the mark, as he hasn’t this all of a sudden while kicking starting his career as a professional.
“I made my Ranji debut last season, Vijay Hazare, Deodhar and then IPL…I trust on my preparations. I never expected anything that has happened so far,” Sundar concluded.
Sundar, who become youngest player to feature in IPL final against Mumbai Indians, has to play a crucial role, as the vital cog for Patriots in the form of Abhinav Mukund is on a national duty to Sri Lanka and skipper Dinesh Karthik will miss couple of matches owing to the shin niggle, as he was advised by doctors to take a rest in order to recover.
Sundar has featured in five first-class matches in which he has bagged seven wickets. He has also claimed seven wickets in List A.
The off-spinner has registered eight wickets in Twenty20.
