With just one round left in the league stages Ranji Trophy 2014-15 promises to be heading towards a great quarter final line-up. After the completion of Round 8 on 1 February the points table especially for the third team in group A and B.
In group C, it is almost decided that Assam and HP will move to into the quarter finals, though there is a theoretical remote chance of Hyderabad upsetting HP if they get outright victory over HP. Here we look at the Summary of the Ranji Trophy matches after round 8 and exceptional performances by a few individuals.
In this group, Karnataka is still at the top of the table with 32 points. The second place is with Tamil Nadu with 23 points. Baroda is placed with 18 points. They lost to Mumbai in the previous match. The fourth place is Mumbai who kept their hopes alive with 17 points, Madhya Pradesh and Railways are with 16 points each.
The third place will be a fight between Baroda, Mumbai, Madhya Pradesh and Railways. Jammu and Kashmir, Bengal have no chance of qualification in the quarter finals while Uttar Pradesh will be relegated to group C next year. In this group KL Rahul smashed a triple ton (311) in the first innings of Karnataka against UP. One wonders why Karnataka did not enforce follow on and look for outright victory. Shahdul Thakur of Mumbai took 5-39 against Baroda.
In Group B Delhi is still at the top of the table with 31 points despite losing to Vidabrabha by an innings in the previous match. Vidarabha has jumped to second place with 24 points after winning their match by an innings and getting 7 points. The third place goes to Maharastra with 20 points.
Punjab has suffered a lot by losing their match against Odisha, as a result they slipped to fourth place with 19 points Rajasthan and Gujrat are at 18 points each getting 5th and 6th place respectively. Haryana is at 7th place with 17 points after defeating Rajasthan by an innings. At the 8th place, Odisha with 14 points getting vital 6 points by beating Punjab.
In this group the match between Odisha and Sauhuarstra will decide who will be relegated to group C next year. It will be tough fight for the second and third place. Individual Highlights in this group were centuries by Khurana 130 and Ankit Bawane 100 for Maharashtra. In the match against Punjab, Odisha Basant Mohanty picked up 10 wickets and 6 wickets in the second innings.
In Group C Assam extended their lead at the top of the table (35 points) by defeating Andhra Pradesh. Assam got 7 points from this match. At the second place Himachal Pradesh is with 27 points after 3 points due to first innings lead. At the third place Andhra is placed at 22. They did not get a point from their previous match.
At fourth place, Kerala has got 19 points after getting 7 points from their previous match. Hyderabad is at 5th place with 17 points. The rest of teams Jharkhand, Tripura, Goa and Services have no chances of qualifying. The second team likely to be in the quarter finals from this group is either HP or AP.
The likely quarter finalists will be Karnataka, Delhi, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Vidarbha, Himachal Pradesh or AP, Baroda or Railways and one of the five teams in group B with 16-20 points.
