Rwanda Cricketer Sets Guinness World Record For Longest Batting Hours

In an unbelievable display of endurance and stamina, Rwanda cricket player Cathia Uwamahoro has set a new Guinness World Record for the longest batting hours (26 hours) in nets by a woman. The 23-year-old started batting in nets on Friday and successfully concluded her attempt at Amahoro indoor stadium Saturday morning.

She is now the second Rwanda cricket player to set a world record in batting after her compatriot Eric Dusingizimana, who holds a 51-hour longest record of batting in nets he set in May, last year after beating the time of 50 hours set by Virag Mare in India last year.

Hanif Mohamed’s epic 337 against the West Indies in 1958 which spanned three days, lasting 16 hours and 10 minutes is cricket’s longest innings.

Speaking to the media after setting the record, she said:

“I am extremely happy to achieve this. It was a long journey, but finally all has ended well.”

Uwamahoro further revealed to Times Sport she was motivated to attempt the record with a purpose of promoting women’s cricket in Rwanda, as well as raise funds for the first international cricket stadium construction, that is underway at Gahanga in Kicukiro District.

Heather Knight, England women’s cricket captain, was at Amahoro indoor stadium to see Uwamahoro break the Guinness World Record.

Rwanda has been taking positive steps towards taking cricket at the national level. And cricketers like Eric and Cathia have been playing chief roles in developing the sport. Rwanda Cricket Association is working in partnership of Surrey Cricket Club to build the first cricket stadium in the country. The English county has pledged to donate 40,000 euros as funds for the project and it is predicted the stadium would be open by March 2017.
