Harmanpreet Kaur is a household name after her knock of 171* in the semi-final against Australia in the Women’s World Cup. Her innings have already drawn a comparison with that which Kapil Dev played in 1983 against Zimbabwe and the girl from the state of Punjab has already been hailed as one of the best players from India. However, in what comes as a surprise, once her application was rejected for the post of Superintendent and it was Sachin Tendulkar who helped her get a high post in Western Railways.

Diana Edulji, former Indian cricketer and one of the members of COA, spotted Harmanpreet at a very young age and wanted her to shift her base to Mumbai. Harmanpreet was already working as a junior class in Northern Railways but was offered post by Edulaji,
“I told her. I will get you a higher post. She was getting a junior class in Northern Railway. I offered her a chief office superintendent post. Her application was later sent to Delhi, but was rejected by the president,” Edulji told The Indian Express.
It was when Edulji contacted Sachin Tendulkar. A member of Parliament and Bharat Ratna wrote to the Railways minister and his recommendation was met and hence, Harmanpreet got a high post in Western Railways,
“I requested Sachin, who is a Member of Parliament, to write a letter to the Railway minister, forwarding the case of Harmanpreet Kaur,” Edulji added.
That is a thing of past now. With the matches of women team also being televised, the scenario has changed now. Though the women cricket is far behind men’s cricket in terms of the tv ratings and all but with time, the scenario will change and Harmanpreet’s knock is one of the incidents which has drawn the interest of people to women cricket.

A win in the final over England though will change the whole scenario as it will be the biggest push to women’s cricket in an upwards direction and from then, there will be looking back for women cricket.
