Over the years, Indian Cricket Team has had quite a few pranksters who have actually created moments that have been as hilarious anything. One of the best examples is Yuvraj Singh. A night before his debut, he alongwith Harbhajan Singh arranged an imaginary interview of Sourav Ganguly where he had been critical of his players.
Early in the morning when Dada reached the meeting room, Yuvraj gave him that fabricated interview where the captain had made harsh comments about some of his players. As soon as he read that, his face lost color and he pleaded in front of his players that he hadn’t given that interview. On the verge of his breaking point, Rahul Dravid could not bear to see his captain like this and told him that it was an April fool’s prank. With this, everyone burst out in laughter and Ganguly, with a bat in his hand, chased everyone. He could barely find the strength to read, but when he did, it made his day. It simply read: “Dada, we all love you.” He then hugged each one of his boys, but gave them a stern warning, never to do the same again.
Just like this, there was another incident that was extremely amusing. Sandeep Patil played this famous prank on Sunil Gavaskar during India’s tour of England in 1982.
The Indians were gearing themselves up at Lord’s and Patil, along with Ravi Shastri, made his way to the ground in cricketing whites and kit bag through the famous Grace Gates. When Patil reached the gate, pointing at Gavaskar, who was travelling behind him, told the security guard: “That gentleman following us is harassing us. He will claim to be the Indian team captain, but don’t believe him. It’s all rubbish.”
Gavaskar, who had taken rest from practice for a day and was not in his whites, was promptly stopped at the gates. As expected, he told the guard that he was the Indian captain and told him the reason why he was not wearing his proper dress. But the security guard did not heed to Gavaskar’s pleas and that left him angry.
Finally, after sometime, Patil came into the picture and rescued his captain!
