Corruption in Pakistan cricket doesn’t seem to relent as in another shocking revelation made by the Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed; he turned down a flourishing offer from a bookmaker based in Dubai. It happened during the ongoing limited-overs series against Pakistan, and the skipper directly reported the matter to the anti-corruption and security unit officials.
Corruption is not new in Pakistan cricket, but the incident came as a shock to the team management. The players and security officials travelling with the team thought that after imposing bans on Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif, who were apparently involved in spot-fixing during the Pakistan Super League, these moves would stop.
“The matter has been handled as per standard procedure but there is a lot of respect for Sarfraz, who as a captain and player, has set a great example for his teammates on how to avoid attempts to corrupt the game,” a Pakistan Cricket Board Official said on the condition of anonymity.
“ICC rules don’t allow us to name player (s) in such cases where approaches are reported but yes Sarfraz got an offer and he immediately reported the matter to the concerned officials, who have taken appropriate action,” he added.
It is learnt that the man who made the verbal offer to Sarfaraz is based in Dubai and is a known face among the players. The unnamed official said that the team management has increased the vigilance and reset the timings of the curfews.
“On the insistence of head coach Mickey Arthur, there was a bit of relaxation for the players during the ongoing series in the UAE and they were allowed to meet friends and go out for shopping and dinners but now strict procedures and timings have been enforced again,” the official said.
The PCB has changed the hotel where they were staying earlier in Dubai after the spot-fixing scandal in the PSL earlier in the year which yet again shook Pakistan cricket.
