AN Sharma, the childhood coach of Virender Sehwag, has revealed that the former India cricketer was disappointed after not being appointed as the Head Coach of Indian cricket team,
“Viru was deeply hurt on not getting the coach post. Whatever he had in his mind have come out now. Otherwise why would he say so three months after he was dumped? I had not discussed this topic with him in last three months. This is because I didn’t want to hurt his feelings more and hit a nerve,” Sharma told The Deccan Chronicle.

Sehwag was the strongest contender to become the Head Coach until Ravi Shastri jumped in the race. In the end, he also emerged out as the ultimate winner. AN Sharma was pretty clear that Sachin Tendulkar, one of the members of Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) had a soft corner for Shastri and he got the preference because of that,
“Sehwag did not get the job because Sachin Tendulkar asked Shastri to apply for the post. Shastri was reported to be not interested in the job and Saurav Ganguly was also not in his favour. Sachin had “soft corner” for Shastri. It was only later the other two members of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) (Ganguly and VVS Laxman) could not voice their opinion against Sachin’s wish and Viru’s application was thus dumped”, he added.
At that time as well, news came out that Tendulkar asked Shastri to apply for it, as the former India all-rounder was reluctant to have a go at it on the first attempt. He only joined the race after the exit of Kumble, who tendered his resignation due to the untenable relation with the skipper Virat Kohli.

Team India is doing well under Shastri, as they have just whitewashed Sri Lanka in all the formats during the first assignment of Shastri as the coach, but Sharma feels Sri Lanka is a weak team and the results would have been same, had Sehwag been the coach of the side,
“Had Sehwag been India coach, the results would have been same. Sri Lanka is a very weak team and India could have won 9-0 (three Tests, five ODIs’, and one T20) “easily”.
