Shakib Al Hasan Becomes Fastest Player 5,000 ODI Runs and 200 ODI Wickets

The greatest ever cricketer Bangladesh has produced, Shakib Al Hasan became the fastest man to reach the double of scoring 5000 ODI runs and bagging more than 200 wickets. Shakib made the record when he ran a single down to the third man of Dwayne Pretorius during the 20th over of the Bangladesh innings to reach the landmark.
Shakib is just the 5th player in the history of the game to achieve the feat. The southpaw reached the landmark in 178 matches and 168 innings. The left-arm spinner reached the 200 ODI landmark against South Africa in Chittagong in 2015. The players to achieve the feat earlier are Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya with 13,340 runs and 323 wickets, Jacques Kaliss with 11,579 runs and 273 wickets, Shahid Afridi with 8,064 runs and 395 wickets and Abdur Razzak with 5,080 runs and 269 wickets.
Shakib also became the 2nd Bangladesh batsman to reach 5,000 runs during the 1st ODI against South Africa. Tamim Iqbal who missed the encounter due to a thigh muscle tear was the first Bangladesh batsman to reach the 5,000 runs landmark in ODI’s. Just like his teammate Tamim Iqbal Shakib’s most productive opponents have been Zimbabwe against whom the southpaw has scored 1,316 ODI runs from 43 encounters.
Barring Zimbabwe, he has also scored more than 500 runs against three other oppositions. New Zealand with 575 runs in 21 matches, Sri Lanka with 532 runs in 18 matches and India with 508 runs in 16 matches.
Over the years Shakib has evolved as the greatest ever Bangladesh cricketer. His all-round skills have been valuable for the upward rise of Bangladesh in international cricket. Very recently he was instrumental in handing Bangladesh their first ever Test victory against the might Aussies during the opening Test in Mirpur. He has been invaluable in Bangladesh’s cause and will continue to hog the limelight until he calls it a day.
