West Indies coach Phil Simmons compared Chris Gayle with Sir Viv Richards after Gayle’s destructive hundred in just 47 balls against England at Wankhede on March 16.
“Gayle is up there with Sir Vivian,” said Simmons. The 36 Years old West Indies left-hander smashed 11 sixes and 5 fours to reach his century. It was the fastest ever at World T 20 and third-fastest overall. Gayle, who became the only second batsman after recently retired Brendon McCullum to score two T20 International hundreds.
“To destroy an attack like that, I think the only person in my time that I would put him with is Sir Vivian because Sir Vivian used to go out and destroy bowlers like that. I think he is up there with Sir Viv in the way he tears apart attacks,” West Indies coach Simmons said.
Before the West Indies batting started, Simmons said to Gayle to stay 15 overs at the crease. “Bat 15 overs for me. That’s all I need from you. I know that once you bat fifteen overs we are somewhere near to the target.” Simmons told reporters after an astonishing win against England by 6 wickets.
The West Indies coach admitted their weakness in T 20 world cup. “All teams have weaknesses but all teams have strengths too. we must use our strength. That’s how you win games.” Simmons said.
