Sourav Ganguly Reveals Zaheer Khan’s Contract Details

Clearing the air surrounding Zaheer Khan’s tenure in the Indian team, Sourav Ganguly, one of the members of the Cricket Advisory Committee, has confirmed the former India bowler will be offered a contract of 150 days per year.

“Zaheer was contacted for 150 days per year,” Ganguly told reporters at Eden Gardens.

The BCCI, on Tuesday (July 11), had appointed Ravi Shastri as the head coach but along with him they also roped in Rahul Dravid and Zaheer. And while their initial statement stated that Zaheer would be full-time bowling consultant and Dravid would be the batting consultant for overseas Test tour, they later clarified that the former pacer has been appointed as Team India’s bowling consultant for specific overseas tours.

“The BCCI announces the appointment of Mr. Ravi Shastri as the Head Coach, Mr. Zaheer Khan as the Bowling Consultant and Mr. Rahul Dravid who will be the Overseas Batting Consultant (Test cricket) for the Indian Cricket Team,” the BCCI had confirmed in a media release on Tuesday.

However, the board later made it clear that Zaheer would be a part-time bowling consultant. Meanwhile, reports are suggesting that Zaheer was not willing to commit more than 100 days but changed his mind after being insisted by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising his former teammates Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Ganguly.

The appointment of Ravi Shastri, meanwhile, has not succeeded in calming down things in Indian cricket. After a turbulent period that saw Anil Kumble resigning as India coach after being informed of Virat Kohli’s reservations over his style, expectations were high that Shastri’s appointment would restore normalcy in Indian cricket.

However, the signs are not encouraging as of now. With Shastri keen to have his own support staff, the CAC came under controversy with reports suggesting that the Committee of Administrators felt that the three-member panel went out of its ambit in picking the coach. Hurt by the accusations, the CAC, on Thursday (July 13), wrote to CoA head Vinod Rai, informing him that Zaheer and Dravid were appointed after informing Shastri and Kohli.
