Sourav Ganguly To Unveil His Own Bronze Statue

Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly will soon have his own grand bronze statue installed at the main gate of the Balurghat Stadium situated in South Dinajpur. The statue, which is reported to be 80 feet tall, has been built by the Sports Association of South Dinajpur as a mark of respect for Ganguly’s achievement in international cricket. To make the occasion more special, the cricketer himself has been invited to inaugurate the statue.

“We believe Sourav Ganguly is not only an icon in Bengal, he has been an inspiration to every human being for his sheer determination which finally made him victorious against all odds in Indian cricket,” the secretary of South Dinajpur District Sports, Gautam Goswami said on the occasion.

“That is why we have decided to set up his statue at the main gate of Balurghat Stadium not only to publicise him, but we want the sports persons all over the north Bengal who will be coming to this stadium, must watch it and get inspired.”

Ganguly, current president of Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), also expressed happiness after is also happy with the news.

“I am feeling honoured with the news. I will try my best to inaugurate the statue.” Said Sourav.

It will be perhaps for the first time that a cricketer will get his own statue being stand tall in India. Normally, the honour is reserved for politicians and other leaders.

Ganguly also predicted that India will be one of the title contenders to win the upcoming Champions Trophy. He also showed confidence that India, who are also the defending champions, will beat Pakistan when the two teams meet at Edgbaston on June 4th.

“I cannot predict whether India will be champions. But I can comment two things. One is that India will be one of the title contenders in the Champions Trophy. Secondly, India will beat Pakistan in their opening match in the tournament.”

He also had some facts to showcase to justify the reason behind choosing India as the as the favourites to beat Pakistan.

“In last, eight to ten years the difference between two teams has been huge. Indian team has been stronger and Pakistan has not been able to match India comparing to all-around utility and strength.”

Team India will be participating in the tournament after a lot of brouhahas created by the BCCI. There was strong speculation about India skipping the tournament as a protest against the ICC over the revamped Revenue model. But eventually, the COA directed the Indian board to announce the squad, thereby making it confirmed that the men in Blue will participate in the multi-nation tournament.
