The upcoming test series between hosts South Africa and England promises to be thrilling affair. The common point between the two fierce sides is that both come on the back of humiliating defeats in Asia. While England fought hard in the Gulf, the Proteas looked simply bland against the might of the Indian spinners. The Proteas, recently named their squad for the home tests against England.
A major surprise was that AB De Villiers would be donning the wicketkeeping gloves yet again, as the selectors have not named another wicketkeeper. It means that Quinton De Kock will have to wait longer for his test berth. Spinners Imran Tahir and Shaun Harmer were axed after ordinary performances in India.
A colossal blow to the planning of the South Africans was that pacer Vernon Philander was ruled out of the first two tests due to the injury he sustained in India. “It is sad to see Vernon get injured in that way,” he said. “When we need him the most, in the conditions that suit him the most, we don’t have him. It’s a big loss for us,” said an official in the South African team.
