South Africa named their squad for the upcoming ICC World T20 in India and the absence of key pacer Morne Morkel was a major surprise. Morkel, who had been the best South African pacer along with Kagiso Rabada on the tour to India, was not named in the 15 man squad despite doing well in recent times. The selectors opted for Kyle Abbott, who had a decent T20I series against India in October.
Dale Steyn was named in the 15 man squad after recovering from his injury and his presence will be a decisive factor in South Africa’s favor. Faf Du Plessis was named as the skipper and from the batting front; Hashim Amla, Quinton De Kock and AB De Villiers would constitute the top order. It will be interesting to see who opens for the Proteas as in the recent T20I’s, De Villiers opened with Amla as well as with De Kock.
Two frontline spinners in Imran Tahir and Aaron Phangiso were named and David Wiese will be all rounder along with the recent million dollar man of the IPL, Chris Morris. “The ICC World T20 is the competition that we have been working towards over the last 18 months,” skipper Faf Du Plessis said. “We have had disappointments in the past and this year is another great opportunity for us to lift that elusive ICC trophy. We have been playing together as a squad for some time now and are really hungry and motivated to put in the performances to bring us success. I’m really excited about the group of players who will be representing the country and hope we can make everyone proud.”
