South Africa's recent record away from home in Test matches

South Africa has been the top-ranked side in Test matches since 2009 and has won 9 consecutive Test series. The South African team had some top players like Graeme Smith, all-rounder Jacques Kallis. At the present moment, the South African team has quality players like AB De Villiers, Dale Steyn, Hashim Amla and some young players like Dean Elgar etc.

South African team’s performances in Test matches have been great since 2010. They have played 14 matches since 2010 and have won 6 matches, drawn 8. Their only loss came against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi.

From 2010 onwards their record in Test matches includes drawing 2 test match series 0-0 against Pakistan in UAE, winning the 3 match test series in New Zealand 1-0 in 2011-12 season, winning the 3 match test series in England 2-0 in 2012, winning the 3 match test series in Australia 1-0 in 2012-13 season, drawing the 2 match test series in UAE 1-1 against Pakistan in 2013-14, winning the 2 match test series in Sri Lanka 1-0 in 2014, winning one and only test match in Zimbabwe in 2014 and drawing the test series in Bangladesh 0-0 recently. This shows that their performances away from home in recent times have been exceptional.  Since 2010, South Africa has won three out of eight Tests, 16 out of 28 ODIs, and 11 out of 17 T20Is on the subcontinent. The recent success is not just a case of South Africa’s maturing as an international outfit who are able to adapt to foreign conditions, but also the result of their players spending a lot more time in the subcontinent thanks to the IPL.

South Africa have some top quality players in the current side that includes Hashim Amla, AB De Villiers, Faf Du Plessis who can play in any conditions and with much confidence. South Africa has been special as their bowling attack has found a way to dismiss the opponent batsmen twice. Dale Steyn has the most number of wickets in Asia since 2007. When the captain wants a wicket Dale Steyn comes with good pace and provides the breakthrough. Vernon Philander does not have pace but bowls with a good line and length, not providing the batsmen the freedom to score runs freely. Morne Morkel who is tall can extract bounce and pace on dead pitches becomes a lethal weapon for him.

The main reason for Dale Steyn success in the subcontinent has been that he bowls fast. Pace through the air is important. With wickets being on the slow side, anything from 135 down batters are able to adjust when the ball hits the deck. A bowler who bowls 145 plus that really rush the batters because it gives them a lot less time to able to adjust when the ball is reversing or there is something off the deck.

No other team in the world has such a proud record in the recent times. The four match test series that will start from tomorrow will be a mouth-watering clash and South Africa would hope to continue their winning streak away from home.

South Africa’s ability to adjust to different conditions makes the team very special. In the current series against India, the South African team has defeated the hosts in the T20 and ODI Series which shows the capability of the team. All the South African players have played in the IPL and because of which they have done well in the series so far.
