South Africa v Australia 1st ODI: Statistical Review!

On Friday, South Africa thrashed Australia in the 1st ODI of 5-match ODI series at SuperSport Park (Centurion). After winning the toss, South Africa decided to bowl first. Australia managed to score 294/9 in 50 overs.

In reply, South Africa chased down that total, wildly. South Africa reached that target in just 36.2 overs, losing 4 wickets.

With a 6-wicket victory, South Africa lead the 5-match ODI series 1-0.

  1. Australian batsmen, George Bailey and John Hastings put on an important 79-run partnership for the 7th wicket. It was the 2nd highest 7th wicket ODI partnership for Australia against South Africa. Australia’s highest 7th wicket ODI partnership against South Africa is 123 between Michael Hussey and Brett Lee (at Brisbane on 15th January 2006).

 

  1. Australia made total 294/9 in 50 overs after batting first. It was Australia’s 4th highest ODI total against South Africa in South Africa.

 

  1. During the chase, South African opening batsmen Quinton de Kock and Rilee Rossouw put on a 145-run partnership for the opening wicket. It was the 2nd highest opening partnership for South Africa against Australia in ODI history. South Africa’s highest opening partnership against Australia in ODI history is 160 runs between Graeme Smith and AB de Villiers at Basseterre on 24th March 2007.

 

  1. In this ODI, South African wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock hit his 11th ODI century which is the most by a South African wicketkeeper-batsman. Quinton de Kock surpassed AB de Villiers in this record list, who has 10 ODI centuries as a South African wicketkeeper-batsman.

With this 11th ODI century, Quinton de Kock also becomes the 3rd most no. of ODI century hitter as a wicketkeeper-batsman. Only former Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batsman Kumar Sangakkara (23 ODI centuries) and former Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist (16 ODI centuries) are ahead from Quinton de Kock on this list.

 

  1. i) South African batsman Quinton de Kock scored 178 runs which is the second highest individual ODI score by a South African batsman. Highest individual ODI score by a South African batsman is 188* by Gary Kirsten (against UAE at Rawalpindi on 16th February 1996).

ii) On the other hand, this 178 runs is also 2nd highest individual ODI score by a wicketkeeper-batsman. The highest individual ODI score by a wicketkeeper-batsman is 183* by MS Dhoni (India) against Sri Lanka at Jaipur on 31st October 2005.

iii) Also, this 178-runs was the 2nd highest individual ODI score by a batsman against Australia. The highest individual ODI score by a batsman against Australia is 209 by Indian batsman Rohit Sharma (at Bangalore on 2nd November 2013).

iv) Also, this 178-runs was the 4th highest individual ODI score by a batsman in the second innings. Chasing down the targets in the second innings of an ODI, the other top three highest individual ODI scores were: 185* by Australian batsman Shane Watson (against Bangladesh at Dhaka on 11th April 2011), 183* by Indian batsman MS Dhoni (against Sri Lanka at Jaipur on 31st October 2005) and 183 by Indian batsman Virat Kohli (against Pakistan at Dhaka on 18th March 2012).

 

  1. Australian right-arm pacer Scott Boland was the highest wicket taker for his team in this ODI but also he was very expensive. Boland’s final bowling figure in this ODI was 7-0-67-3 along with 9.57 economy rate. It was the highest economy rate by an Australian bowler who picked up 3 or more wickets in an ODI match.

The previous highest economy rate by an Australian bowler who picked up 3 or more wickets in an ODI match was 9.33 by Pat Cummins against South Africa at Centurion on 19th October 2011.

 

  1. South Africa chased down the 295-runs target in just 36.2 overs after losing only 4 wickets. It was the fastest 270+ runs chase in ODI history. India was the previous record holder in this record who had chased the 321-runs target in just 36.4 overs (321/3) against Sri Lanka at Hobart on 28th February 2012.
