On Wednesday, South Africa clinched an outstanding victory against Australia in the 3rd ODI of 5-match ODI series at Kingsmead (Durban). After winning the toss, Australia decided to bat first and made 371/6 in 50 overs.

In reply, South Africa chased down that mammoth target successfully in 49.2 overs after losing 6 wickets. South Africa won this match by 4 wickets and secured this 5-match ODI series by leading 3-0 after the end of this 3rd ODI.

  1. In this ODI, Australian batsmen David Warner and George Bailey completed 3,000 runs in their ODI careers. This ODI innings was Warner’s 81st ODI innings while Bailey’s 80th ODI innings. Bailey became the jointly fastest (according to the no. of innings) Australian batsmen to complete 3,000 ODI runs while Warner became the second fastest (according to the no. of innings) Australian batsman to complete 3,000 ODI runs.

Former Australian batsman Michael Bevan also had taken 80 ODI innings to complete his 3,000 ODI runs.

 

  1. David Warner played a great innings in this ODI as he scored 117 runs. It was the highest individual ODI score by an Australian opener against South Africa in South Africa. The previous best was 115* by Mark Waugh at Port Elizabeth on 31st march 1997.

Also this 117-runs innings was the second highest individual ODI score by an Australian opener on South African soil. The highest individual ODI score by an Australian opener on South African soil was 136* by Shane Watson against England at Centurion on 2nd October 2009.

 

  1. Australian opening batsman David Warner and no. 3 batsman Steven Smith put 124 runs partnership for the 2nd wicket. It was the Australia’s highest 2nd wicket ODI partnership against South Africa in South Africa. The previous best was for 123 runs between David Boon and Dean Jones at Port Elizabeth on 22nd February 1994.

 

  1. Australian skipper Steven Smith also scored a century in this ODI. Smith was bowled by South African pacer Dale Steyn after scoring 108 runs. Smith became the 2nd Australian captain to score ODI century in South Africa. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting (five times) was the other Australian captain to score ODI century in South Africa.

 

  1. Australian opener David Warner (117) and no. 3 batsman Steven Smith (108) hit centuries in this ODI. It was only the 2nd time that two Australian batsmen hit centuries against South Africa in the same ODI. The first time it happened at Melbourne on 16th August 2000, where Michael Bevan (106) and Steve Waugh (114*) had scored centuries.

 

  1. Australia scored 371/6 in 50 overs. It was the Australia’s 5th highest ODI total in overall and 3rd highest ODI total against South Africa.

 

  1. South African pacer Dale Steyn was very expensive in this ODI as his final bowling figure in this ODI was 10-0-96-2. As a South African bowler, Steyn became the highest runs conceding bowler in an ODI innings. The previous record holder was Wayne Parnell who had conceded 95 runs (10-0-95-2) against India at Gwalior on 24th February 2010.

 

  1. South African batsman David Miller scored a brilliant century in this match. Miller remained unbeaten on 118 runs to secure a great victory for his team. It was the highest individual ODI score by a South African batsman who came to bat from no.6 to no.11. The previous highest score was 115* by JP Duminy (no.6) against Zimbabwe at Hamilton on 15th February 2015.

Also coming to bat from no.6 to no.11, David Miller became the 3rd South African batsman to score an ODI century. The previous two South African batsmen in this list were: JP Duminy (no.6) and Justin Kemp (no.7).

 

  1. South African batsmen David Miller and Andile Phehlukwayo put the most important partnership of the match. Collectively these two put an unbeaten 107 run partnership for the 7th wicket. It was the South Africa’s second highest ODI partnership for the 7th wicket. South Africa’s highest ODI partnership for the 7th wicket was for 114 runs between Mark Boucher and Lance Klusener against India at Nagpur on 19th March 2000.

 

10. South Africa chased down 372 runs successfully in this match in 49.2 overs after losing 6 wickets. It was the 2nd highest successful chase in ODI history. The highest successful ODI chase record holder was also South Africa and that was too against Australia. The highest successful ODI chase was 438/9 (at Johannesburg on 12th March 2006).

 

11. In this ODI, 5 Australian bowlers conceded 50+ runs during South Africa’s successful chasing down the mammoth total of 372 runs. The 5 bowlers were: Chris Tremain (1/65), Daniel Worrall (0/78), John Hastings (2/79), Mitchell Marsh (1/61) and Adam Zampa (1/55). It was the 7th time in Australian ODI history where 5 Australian bowlers conceded 50+ runs in an ODI innings.
