A Young 27-year-old South African pacer Hardus Viljoen penned down a contract with Kent as their overseas cricketer on Friday (August 19) and is set to play four matches for the county.  Viljoen is expected to play his first match against Gloucestershire, on Tuesday (August 23)

The fast bowler from Easterners made his Test debut against England at Wanderers this year but managed  to pick up just one wicket in the match.

Viljoen, earlier, thought to migrate to New Zealand, as he couldn’t break into the national fold. However, he ended up with 48 wickets  at 24.50 during the 2015-2016first class  season and forced his away into the South African setup.

“I’m delighted to join Kent and experience county cricket,” Viljoen said. “I’ve just played a tri-series for South Africa A so I feel in good shape after a few weeks off. I’m looking forward to representing Kent and I will give it my all as it’s always been a dream to play county cricket.”

Viljoen will strengthen the bowling attack of Kent. Mitchell Claydon, the former Durham pacer, and Matt Coles have toiled by picking up 66 wickets between them this season, but a lack spearhead has hurt Kent’s chances of being promoted to Division 1. Kent are presently placed third in Division 2.

“We’ve carried a lot of injuries in the seam bowling department this summer,” said Graham Johnson, Kent’s chairman of cricket.

“With four important games left in the campaign, we wanted to give ourselves the best chance to build on the work done to get us into the current position to challenge for that one promotion spot. The experience and spark that Hardus can bring will be important in the run-in,” he summed up.
