There are quite a few examples of sports persons getting injured midway through the match which might end their career. But on a sader part, there are few incidents where those injuries turned fatal and claimed the lives of the sportspersons. Here is a list of five most fatal incidents where sportpersons dead while they were playing.
Former Indian cricketer Raman Lamba lost his like on the field while playing for Dhaka’s leading club, Abahani Krira Chakra in the finals of BAngladesh’s premier First Class tournament. He was fielding at short leg without wearing a helmet. Mohammedan Sporting Club‘s Mehrab Hossain hit a ball ferociously hit the head of Lamba and flew into the hands of wicket keeper Khalid Mashud. He left the field and it was revealed that he was hit on the temple by the red cherry though the injury did not appear to be particularly serious, he suffered an internal hemorrhage and slipped into coma. Although a neurosurgeon was flown in from Delhi, all efforts were in vain. After three days his ventilator was removed and he was declared dead.
Formula 1 legend Ayrton Senna ended his career midway through the 1994 Italian GP when he had his car crashed after losing control. Senna had enough time to get onto the brakes and reduce his speed to 217kph (135mph). Drivers had survived accidents at higher speeds – it was Senna’s misfortune to be struck by a flying piece of suspension which inflicted a fatal head injury. Eventually Senna was put in the helicopter and flown to Maggiore hospital in Bologna where he was announced dead.
Nigerian International Cristiano Junior died during the finals of Federation Cup between Mohun Bagan and Dempo at Bangalore, India. He collided with Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Subrata Paul in the 78th minute while scoring his second goal as the goalie’s fists hit Cristiano’s chest quite heavily. He staggered away, then collapsed. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful and he was dead on arrival at Hosmat Hospital.
Before an away match with Enugu Rangers, Goalkeeper Adun of Warri Wolves FC, was assaulted by thugs suspected to be fans of the opposition team. Slumped and died 3 days later from internal haemorrhage. Orobosan was beaten, disgraced and sorely injured by the opposition fans. The satisfied hoodlums fled the scene leaving the 28 year old sprawling in a near-death state. 72 hours later, in the course of training and physical warm-ups; Orobosan, determined to get over the attack. unfortunately slumped. He was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
Dani Jarque was a Spanish Footballer who lost his life while playing for Espanyol during the preseason of the 2009 season. His close friend and Barcelona midfielder Andrés Iniesta celebrated his 116th minute World Cup winning goal by removing his jersey to reveal an undershirt with the sentence “Dani Jarque siempre con nosotros” (“Dani Jarque, always with us”). Two years later, after Spain conquered UEFA Euro 2012, Fàbregas again donned a T-shirt during the trophy celebrations to commemorate Jarque’s death.
