Sportzwiki’s Year End Review: Major ODI Records Broken in 2017

There were total 129 ODIs played in 2017. Out of those, 122 matches finished with a result while seven others failed to produce any results. Apart from those matches, there were also two additional ODIs which had been abandoned without a toss.

Records are made to be broken. In the year of 2017, few ODI records were newly recreated by the players or teams. Here we covered some major ODI records that are broken in 2017.

 

  1. (On 25th February)

*Fastest to complete 9,000 ODI runs

Previous Record Holder: Sourav Ganguly (India) – took 228 innings (on 9th January 2004) to complete 9,000 ODI runs.

Current Record Holder: *AB de Villiers (South Africa/Africa XI) – took 205 innings to complete 9,000 ODI runs.

  1. (On 26th February)

Shortest completed ODI innings (by balls)

Previous Record Holder: Namibia (scored 45 runs) – faced total 84 deliveries (14 overs) against Australia at Potchefstroom on 27th February 2003

Current Record Holder: Zimbabwe (scored 54 runs) – faced total 83 deliveries (13.5 overs) against Afghanistan at Harare.

Fastest to complete 7,000 ODI runs

Previous Record Holder: Virat Kohli (India) – took 161 innings (on 17th January 2016) to complete 7,000 ODI runs.

Fastest to complete 8,000 ODI runs

Previous Record Holder: AB de Villiers (South Africa/Africa XI) – took 182 innings (on 26th August 2015) to complete 8,000 ODI runs.

Most stumpings in ODI career

Previous Record Holder: Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka/Asia XI/ICC World XI) – made 99 stumpings in ODI career.

Current Record Holder: MS Dhoni (India/Asia XI) – broke the record on 3rd September 2017. At the end of this year, MS Dhoni has made 105 stumpings in ODI career.

i) *Fastest to complete 9,000 ODI runs

Previous Record Holder: *AB de Villiers (South Africa/Africa XI) – took 205 innings (on 25th February 2017) to complete 9,000 ODI runs.

ii) Most runs scored by an ODI captain in a calendar year

Previous Record Holder: Ricky Ponting (Australia) – scored total 1,424 runs in 2007

Current Record Holder: Virat Kohli (India) – broke the record on 29th October 2017. Kohli scored total 1,460 runs as captain in 2017.

  1. (On 5th December)

Youngest player to take 4 or more wickets in an ODI innings

Previous Record Holder: Talha Jubair (Bangladesh) – at the age of 16 years and 297 days, he claimed a bowling figure of 10-1-65-4 against South Africa at Potchefstroom on 3rd October 2002.

Current Record Holder: Mujeeb Zadran (Afghanistan) – at the age of 16 years and 252 days, he claimed a bowling figure of 10-2-24-4 against Ireland at Sharjah.
