Records are made to be broken. In 2016, some ODI records were made after breaking previous records in the process. In this article, we will talk about this.
Here are the records – date wise – created in 2016:
On 17th January
Fastest to 7,000 runs (by innings and matches) – During the 3rd ODI between Australia and India (5-match ODI series) at Melbourne, Indian batsman Virat Kohli completed his 7,000 ODI career runs. Kohli took 161 innings (169 matches) to complete his 7,000 ODI career runs, which is the fastest to complete this feat (by innings and matches). The previous record holder was AB de Villiers (South Africa/ Africa XI) who had completed his 7,000 ODI career runs in 166 innings (172 matches).
On 23rd January
Most centuries in a bilateral series – Total 11 centuries were scored in the 5-match ODI series between Australia and India (in Australia). It is the most no. of centuries scored in a bilateral ODI series. The previous record was 9 centuries during India vs Australia 5-match ODI series (in India) in 2013.
On 21st June
Highest runs scored by no.8 – In first ODI of 5-match series between England and Sri Lanka at Trent Bridge, England’s no.8 batsman Chris Woakes had played a brilliant match saving 95* runs innings (that match resulted in a tie). It is the highest individual ODI runs scored by a no.8 batsman. The previous record was 84 runs by Thomas Odoyo (Kenya) against Bangladesh at Nairobi (Gym) on 13th August 2006.
On 24th June
Highest run-chased without losing any wicket – During the 2nd ODI of 5-match ODI series between England and Sri Lanka at Birmingham, England chased down 256 runs without losing a wicket (target 255, England 256/0). It is the highest ODI target chased by a team without losing a wicket. The previous record was 236/0 by New Zealand against Zimbabwe at Harare (4th August 2015).
On 21st August
Fastest (no. of matches) to 100 wickets – In first ODI of 5-match ODI series between Sri Lanka and Australia at Colombo (RPS), Australian pacer Mitchell Starc completed his 100th ODI wicket after dismissing Sri Lankan batsman Dhananjaya de Silva. Starc took 52 ODI matches to achieve this feat which is the fastest (in terms of no. of matches) to take 100 ODI wickets by a bowler. The previous record holder was former Pakistan off-spinner Saqlin Mushtaq who had taken 53 ODI matches to achieve this feat.
On 30th August
Highest total – In the 3rd ODI of 5-match ODI series between England and Pakistan at Trent Bridge (Birmingham), England scored 444/3 in 50 overs after batted first. It is the highest ODI total by a team. The previous highest ODI total was 443/9 (50 overs) by Sri Lanka against Netherlands at Amstelveen on 4th July 2006.
Highest score by no.11 – In the same ODI match between England and Pakistan at Trent Bridge (Birmingham), Pakistan’s no.11 batsman Mohammad Amir scored 58 runs. It is the highest individual ODI runs score by a no.11 batsman. The previous record was 43 by Shoaib Akhtar (Pakistan) against England at Cape Town on 22nd February 2003.
On 25th September
Most centuries by debutant batsman in a calendar year – Total 2 debutant ODI batsmen (KL Rahul from India and Temba Bavuma from South Africa) hit centuries in 2016, which is the highest no. of centuries by debutant batsman in a calendar year in ODI cricket. Before this year, there were no incidents where more than one debutant ODI batsman hit a century in a calendar year.
Highest total when only 5 bowlers used – During the only ODI between South Africa and Ireland at Benoni, South Africa had made 354/5 in 50 overs after batting first. Total 5 bowlers had bowled in that South Africa innings for which it is the highest ODI total by a team when the opponent used only 5 bowlers. The previous highest was 333/9 by England against Sri Lanka at Taunton on 11th June 1983.
