Sportzwiki’s Year Review: Top 5 ODI Innings Of 2016

The year 2016 has come to a sprinting end for India as they keep their stranglehold on England on their tour to India, winning the series 4-0. Both teams have been involved in some exciting matches throughout the year all around the world and there have been a number of superb knocks from batsmen from countries across the world that have set the stage alight.

From Quinton de Kock to Aaron Finch, there have been some entertaining knocks that have made the game all the more interesting. This year has seen some star batsmen find stupendous form and that has seen some top class innings from star players from different countries.

But with the year almost coming to an end, here is a recap of the 5 best ODI innings by batsmen for the year 2016:

Rohit Sharma (India) – 171 (163b, 13*4, 7*6)

The only Indian on the list – Rohit Sharma has made it a habit to score big centuries in ODI cricket recently. He holds some respectable records in the game and will be remembered as one of the best.

This innings of his against Australia in Perth will be high up there with one of his best. In the first ODI of a tour at the WACA, India chose to bat having won the toss and took full advantage to post a decent target of 309 runs.

Though they lost Dhawan early, Sharma managed to stay at the crease for more than close to 3 and half hours on his way to a remarkable 171 on the night. He remained not out having opened the batting and broke Sir Vivian Richard’s record of the highest score against Australia in Australia in this innings. However, it was not enough for India as George Bailly and Steven Smith scored hundreds to steal away an early lead in the series.

Here are the highlights:

Aaron Finch (Australia) – 55 (19b, 8*4, 3*6)

In one of the most entertaining innings of the year, Australia’s Aaron Finch took Sri Lanka apart at the Dambulla stadium on Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka in August this year. Sri Lanka decided to bat first and struggled throughout the innings to post a mediocre score of 212. Australia were expected to win it easily but what followed was not what many expected.

With hardly any total to chase, Australia were expected to play with some patience, but Finch came out all guns blazing to give Sri Lanka not even a sniff in the game. He raced away to 34 inside 5 over and helped Australia on their way with a quick fire 55 from just 19 balls. He scored the joint-fastest ODI century by an Australian and gave his side an unassailable lead in the 5-match ODI series.

Alex Hales (England) – 171 (122b, 22*4, 4*6)

England have in the recent past, surpassed some astonishing feats in world cricket. This innings from Alex Hales was one such feat by England who scored the highest score in ODI history at Trent Bridge against Pakistan in August this year. Having won the toss, England chose to bat and Hales helped himself to 171, the highest individual score by an English batsman in one day cricket.

Though there was help from batsmen at the other end, Hales put in a mammoth performance with the bat to help his side to a tremendous start and was only stopped by Hasan Ali who trapped him lbw. Having also helped England to a series victory, this memorable knock from Hales is one of the best innings in one day cricket in this year.

Here are the highlights:

David Warner (Australia) – 173 (136b, 24*4)

In an innings that went in vain, Australia’s pocket dynamite David Warner, played an innings of his lifetime in Cape Town against South Africa October this year. Having opted to bat, the hosts put in a target in excess of 320 and Australia had a poor start losing Steve Smith, George Bailey and Aaron Finch cheaply.

But South Africa ran into a rampant David Warner who scored his second century of that series in fine fashion. Though he had little support at the other end, he stood strong, and kept punishing South Africa to get his side to within touching distance of a victory. He ran out of partners as Australia eventually lost by 31 runs to lose the series 5-0 but this game will be remembered for the extraordinary innings by the left handed opener.

Here are the highlights:

1. Quinton de Kock (South Africa) – 178 (113b, 16*4, 11*6)

In arguably one of the best ODI innings ever played in South Africa, South Africa’s wicket-keeper batsman Quinton de Kock, produced an innings to cherish in the first ODI on Australia’s tour of South Africa in October. Australia batted first and put on a decent total of 294 but de Kock made light work of it in no time.

He was rampant right from the start of the game, giving the Australian bowlers no respite on his way to 178, his career best, as he also wrote his name in South Africa’s history scoring the second highest individual score as a batsman in their history. He helped his side to the third highest successful run chase in ODI history with his innings to cherish.
