Sri Lankan Cricket board has appointed South African former fast bowler Alan Donald as the national side’s bowling consultant for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2017 which is scheduled from June 1 in England and Wales.
The reports suggested the 50-year-old Donald will work with Sri Lankan team on a temporary basis for two months before joining Kent as a bowling assistant.
“I’m 100% committed to Kent despite the frustration of not being able to join Matt Walker and the boys as planned,” Donald was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
In the recent past, Allan Donald had served his national side and Australia in 2016 as a bowling coach and he is scheduled to join Kent in 2018.
Interestingly, Donald is expected to complete his Level Three coaching programme before joining English county cricket club Kent.
Bound to join the Kent, Donald was released following the delay owing to the work-permit in the domestic competition for two months.
“In the meantime, I’m working towards my Level 3 and this opportunity to work with Sri Lanka means I can return to coaching before joining Kent in time for next season,” Donald added.
Donald has also done a stint with Indian Premier League franchises Royal Challengers Bangalore and Pune Warriors in the recent past. In the last week, the Lankan board had announced 15-man squad which will be led by Angelo Mathews.
“I’m following this season closely and hoping the boys can get promotion and compete in white-ball cricket,” Donald concluded.
The reports also added Donald will give some tidbits to the coaching staff of the Lankan team which further includes Champaka Ramanayake, Nuwan Zoysa, Chaminda Vaas and Ravindra Pushpakumara.
Donald will arrive in Colombo on Monday (May 1) to join the squad at the Pallakelle International Stadium, as the conditioning camp will take place from May 9 to 16 which further include rigorous training sessions before the ICC’s mega event and train-the-trainer sessions.
The Bloemfontein-born Donald has claimed 330 wickets in 72 Tests at an impressive average of 22.25. The former Proteas bowler also played 164 One-day Internationals in which he has bagged 272 wickets at an average of 21.78.
