Riding on the good performances of Ajantha Mendis, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardne, hosts Sri Lanka defeated rusty England by 8 wickets in the rain-affected 2nd ODI (45 overs per side) of the seven match ODI series.
Chasing 186, Sri Lankan stalwarts Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardne made light work of England bowlers after they lost two quick wickets of their openers Kusal Perera and Tillakaratne Dilshan. Both Sangakkara and Jayawardne remained not out on 67 and 77 respectively. Both scored eight fours during their innings with Jayawardne scoring an additional six. Steven Finn and Moeen Ali took a wicket each.
Earlier after winning the toss and electing to bat first, England lost three early wickets. Moeen Ali, who scored a hundred in the 1st ODI, was bowled by Tillakaratne Dilshan in the second over of the match. Ian Bell, playing his 150th ODI fell to Rangana Herath in the ninth over. Joe Root tried to stabilize the innings but he also fell to Mathews. He scored 42. Ravi Bopara, who almost took England to a victory in the last match, again fell short of partners during his gritty innings of 51 and England got bundled out for 185 inside their full quota of overs. Tillakaratne Dilshan and Ajantha Mendis were the wrecker’s-in-chief as Dilshan took care of England’s top-order and Mendis cleaned up the middle-order.
The 3rd ODI will take place on December 3rd in Hambantota.
