In the latest development, ahead of three-match Test series, Sri Lanka has had to face a massive blow, as its newly-appointed skipper Dinesh Chandimal has been ruled out of the first Test against India on Friday owing to pneumonia, which is scheduled for July 26 at Galle. The SLC team manager Asanka Gurusinha has confirmed the news to the Sri Lankan media on July 21.

Sportzwiki has learnt, the Balapitiya-born 27-year Chandimal was admitted to a hospital after he was diagnosed with pneumonia.

“He was admitted to hospital this morning at 9am, and he’s definitely out of the first Test,” Gurusinha revealed to Sri Lankan media.

According to the initial reports, the right-handed batsman Chandimal is expected to be replaced by experienced left-arm orthodox spinner Rangana Herath in the Galle Test against Virat Kohli-led India.

“Most probably the captain is going to be Rangana, because for now it’s just one Test, and he has done the job before,” Gurusinha was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

Yet, to decide on the skipper in the absence of unwell Chandimal, Gurusinha revealed the management will come up with the final decision later in the day regarding the captain.

“But we haven’t worked everything out. We will sit down and do that this afternoon,” Gurusinha further added.

Earlier, Chandimal has led Sri Lanka to a record-chasing win in Asian conditions, in the solitary Test after the hosts struggled against Zimbabwean bowlers at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

“We were actually only told late last night, he’s got pneumonia, Actually, the blood Test came a bit late,” Gurusinha remarked.

Interestingly, in the One-off Test, it was a remarkable show from wicket-keeper batsman Niroshan Dickwella and all-rounder Asela Gunaratne with the bat — to see the Islanders crossing past the line with ease after early hiccups.

Earlier, Sri Lanka Cricket has shown full faith in the experienced campaigner soon after all-rounder Angelo Matthews tendered his resignation as a skipper.

“Doctors have advised us this morning Chandimal needs time to recover,” Gurusinha concluded.

The third Test is scheduled in Pallekele before the five-match One-day International series will kick start followed by a solitary Twenty20 match which is scheduled on September 6, to mark the end of a long tour.

Playing a significant role for the Lions particularly in Test format, Chandimal has featured in 37 Tests after making his longer format debut in 2011 against South Africa.

In 67 innings of the format, Chandimal has amassed 2,610 runs at an average of 42.09. He has smashed eight centuries and 12 half-centuries.
