England beat Sri Lanka by 5 wickets (D/L method) in the third ODI.

England finally found out them self inside the series, against the hosts Sri Lanka as the English team managed to beat the hosts team in a rain affected match reducing the series lead of the hosts by 2-1.

After winning the toss, Hosts decided to bat. However, they lost wicket of Perera in second over soon at the end of which rain increased its pace and made the play to be abrupt for almost 2 and half hours, as a result, the game was reduced to 35-over affair.

After the rain break, Dilshan struck some boundaries before felling for 22 and Kandamby followed the opener with a duck. With 3 wickets down for 31, Sangakkara and Sri Lankan captain, Mathews tried to rebuilt their innings. They tried to maintain the team run rate near to 6 by putting on a stand of 87 in 86 balls after which Mathews departed after edging one to keeper off Jordon for 37.

Soon Sangakkara, who completed his 89th ODI fifty, dismissed by Jordan for 63. But Thirimanne’s power hitting and Prasad’s cameo towards the end of the innings which helped Sri Lanka ending on 245 for 8 in 35 overs. Thirimanne scored a quick fire 62 in just 47 balls and Prasad smashed two fours and two sixes in his 8-ball, 21.

England was asked to chase 236 after D/L revision. However, in the stiff total chase, England got off to a flyer with Moeen Ali been the aggressor. Cook on other end didn’t look confident but managed to score 34 and shared 84 run stand in 70 deliveries with Ali for opening wicket. Moeen Ali scored in sixes as he hit 5 sixes in his innings of 58 which came in just 40 balls came to an end due to run out.

Hales looked good in his knock of 27 came in 29 balls but departed in view of required run rate. Bopara who struck a Six on his 2nd ball was caught behind on the third delivery and Morgan continued his failures by scoring just one as England were reduced to 152 for 4 in 24rd over. But it was Joe Root and Jos Buttler who took England with a steady contribution.

When 40 were asked to be scored in 4 overs, Root started of with a six and got out on next ball, which turned out to be no-ball and later, in the same over, Jos Buttler smacked hat trick fours yielding 25 runs. It took another 10 balls for England to complete off the proceedings and won the game by 5 wickets with 8 deliveries left.
