Sri Lanka vs India 2017: Batting In The First Innings Was The Biggest Positive – Sunil Gavaskar

India kicked off their tour to Sri Lanka on a positive note, as the visiting side dominated the hosts in all the departments of the game and sealed an empathic win to kick off the tour.

Every player made his contribution in the win. From batting to bowling, each player was the pick, which was the biggest strength of India. Three of India’s batsmen scored a century, which wasn’t the case with Sri Lanka and in the end, it mattered a lot.

Riding on an innings of 190 from Shikhar Dhawan and a century from Cheteshwar Pujara, India posted a sky-rocketing total of 600 in the first innings. The scoreboard pressure of Sri Lanka was enough for India to get an advantage and Sri Lanka found themselves depleted all throughout the game.

India didn’t enforce the follow on after the end of Sri Lanka’s first innings and continued to bat, which further put pressure on Lankans and with this, India ensured that the hosts are ruled out of the game. With this win, India showed its intent for the series and sent out a message as well.

Sunil Gavaskar, the former India skipper, was pretty much impressed with the performance of the team in the first Test and he heaped praises on the players. Gavaskar had a special praise of word for Dhawan, Pujara and debutant Hardik Pandya,

“The way Indian team batted in the first innings was the biggest positive. It was a good pitch to bat on and Shikhar Dhawan cashed upon it by scoring 190. Cheteshwar Pujara continued his rich form. Hardik Pandya’s 50 on debut was impressive,” Gavaskar told NDTV.

Questions are being asked why Indian skipper Virat Kohli didn’t enforce the follow-on and Gavaskar had a clear answer to it,

“It totally depends upon your bowlers. It totally depends upon whether you are deciding to give your bowlers a break. Also, the pitch was good to bat on day three. A captain would always want to bat on day three pitch so as to take the game away from Sri Lanka,” he added.

The win in this game, however, has posted few questions for skipper Virat Kohli. With KL Rahul fit for the second Test, will he make a comeback to the side? Who will be dropped to facilitate him a place in the team? This is the biggest question which lies ahead of skipper before the start of the second Test match in Colombo from August 3.
