Sri Lanka vs India 2017: Hosts Recall Dushmantha Chameera, Lahiru Gamage for Pallekele Test

Sri Lankan fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera has yet again staged a comeback into the national team after being named in the squad for the 3rd Test against India starting at Pallekele on Saturday.

Medium pacer Lahiru Gamage, who broke into the national set up in an ODI series against India in 2014 has also been recalled.

The squad has been reduced to 15 members after the omission of Danuska Gunathilaka and Rangana Herath. While Gunathilaka hasn’t been at the best of touches, Herath was already ruled out after suffering a mild back injury during the 2nd Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo.

Chameera is an out and out fast bowler who can clock 140km/hr on a consistent basis but his brief career has already been plagued by many injuries. He was part of the Sri Lankan squad which toured England in 2016 before sustaining a stress fracture which ruled him out of the rest of the series after playing the opening match at Headingley.

He was also part of the squad which toured South Africa during the end of last year. He wasn’t at his best and injuries prevented him from bowling at his ideal pace which led to his omission from the final two Tests. Sri Lanka was eventually whitewashed 3-0, as they failed to put up any competition.

Chameera was also a part of the squad when Bangladesh toured the Island nation and was again included in the extended squad for the one-off Test against Zimbabwe but failed to break into the playing XI. He was expected to be included in the squad for the series against India but he was later overlooked by the selectors but with the injury to Nuwan Pradeep, he has got another opportunity to prove his mettle.

Lahiru Gamage, on the other hand, is a rookie in the longest format of the game and has the experience of playing of five ODI’s behind his back. Left-arm chinaman bowler Lakshan Sandakan has also been brought in with the two other spinners being Dilruwan Perera and Malinda Pushpakumara.

Sri Lanka who is already trailing 0-2 in the series needs to play out of their skin to avoid a 0-3 whitewash. If India does manage to enforce a clean sweep, it will Sri Lanka’s first whitewash at home since the 2003-04 series against Australia.

Sri Lanka squad: Dinesh Chandimal (C), Angelo Mathews, Upul Tharanga, Dimuth Karunaratne, Niroshan Dickwella (wk), Kusal Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva, Lahiru Thirimanna, Lahiru Kumara, Vishwa Fernando, Dushmantha Chameera, Lahiru Gamage, Dilruwan Perera, Malinda Pushpakumara and Lakshan Sandakkan.
