Sri Lanka vs India 2017: Rangana Herath Ruled Out of Third Test

Rangana Herath, the Sri Lanka’s spin bowling spearhead, has been ruled out of the third and final Test of the series against India due to a back injury.

He is suffering from the back pain and the team management has decided not to risk the 39-year old spinner for the final the game, when Sri Lanka has already lost the series,

“Rangana complained about back pain and we don’t want to take any chances with him. He is our leading bowler and we have a hectic season ahead. Hence we thought not to risk him for the final game of the series already lost,” a source told Cricbuzz.

Herath is the fourth causality to Sri Lankan team during the three-Test series, with one match still to go. The home side suffered the first blow in form of Asela Gunaratne, who was hit on his thumb on the first day of the first Test and was then ruled out of full Test series. Suranaga Lakmal followed the batsman. Nuwan Pradeep also has been ruled out due to a hamstring injury. He suffered the injury in the 81st over of team India’s innings in the second Test and did not bowl thereafter.

Though he came out to bat. Apart from that, the home side also missed services of Dinesh Chandimal in the first Test with the newly appointed skipper suffering from Pneumonia.

In addition to that, Sri Lanka was one batsman short in the first innings of the first Test, whereas, count increased to two in the second innings, with Herath not coming out to bat after the ball hit him on his fingers.

In short, the series has been full of injuries for the home side, which has had an effect on the performance of the team in totality.

India leads the series by a margin of 2-0 and will eye a complete whitewash with a win in the next game, whereas, Dinesh Chandimal led side will look to upset the visitors. However, the chances of India stamping the authority in the next game looks quite even.

The third and the final Test of the series starts on August 12 at Pallekele International Stadium in Pallekele.
