Sri Lankan batting lynchpin Kumar Sangakkara on December 18th surpassed Ricky Ponting’s record of scoring the most runs in a calendar year across all formats (Tests, ODIs and T20s).

Ricky Ponting, the former Australian captain, created this record in 2005 with 2833 runs in 46 international matches. But Sangakkara broke his record in an ODI against England at Colombo. Before this ODI, Sangakkara had 2828 runs, but in this ODI, he scored 33 runs to take his total run-tally to 2861 runs in 2014.

This 33-run innings was also Sangakkara’s last on Sri Lankan soil.

The only Indian to feature in this list is Rahul Dravid. He achieved this feat in 1999.
