Stat Attack: Players Who Carried Their Bats Through A Completed Innings In ODIs

No game gives as much importance to teammates as cricket. A player’s fortunes depends a lot on how his partners perform and without the co-operation of his fellow players, it is next to impossible to prosper in this game. And ‘carrying the bat’ is probably the biggest example of this.

The term, ‘carry the bat’ refers to an opening batsman who remains the only unbeaten player when his team’s innings is finished. Well, no matter how good the batsman is batting,if he runs out of the partners, the good form will count for nothing. Recently, New Zealand opener Tom Latham became only the tenth batsman in the history of One-Day Internationals to carry his bat when he remained unbeaten on 79 while his team was folded for 190 against India last month (October).

So here, we are presenting to the list of all the players who have managed to carry their bats in an ODI match.

10. Tom Latham – 79* vs India, 16 October 2016:

After being whitewashed in the Test series, Kane Williamson’s men began the ODI series in a similar fashion as the batsmen again failed to perform with the willow. The Kiwi batsmen were falling like a pack of cards but their opening batsman Tom Latham held firm from one end and helped his team to get to 190 after being reduced to 65 for 7. In the process, he became the first player from his country to carry the bat.

Coming to the match’s result, India comfortably chased down the total in the 34th over. Virat Kohli was the highest scorer with 85 runs.

9. Azhar Ali – 81* vs Sri Lanka, 16 June 2012:

The second player from Pakistan to carry his bat in the 50-overs game, Azhar Ali achieved the milestone against Sri Lanka in 2012. Batting first, the island country could post only 243 runs in their allotted 50 overs. However, their pacers- Lasith Malinga, Nuwan Kulasekara and Thisara Perera, who claimed a hat-trick,  shocked the Pakistani team with some brilliant display of pace bowling.

The visitors were cruising at one stage as they were 166 for 2 in their pursuit of the small target, but a sudden collapse saw them losing their remaining 8 wickets for only 33 runs. While the other batsmen fell one after one, Azhar Ali remained unbeaten on 81 off 126 balls.

8. Javed Omar – 33* vs Zimbabwe, 8 April 2001:

Chasing 231, Bangladesh lost wickets in a flurry as they were dismissed for a paltry total of 103 runs. Only three batsmen could cross the double-digit mark as the Asian country lost the match by a big margin of 127 runs. Omar, who top-scored for his team with 33 runs, tried his best to get his team over the line but ran out of partners. In the process, he became the first batsman to carry his bat through an innings.

Another fine innings from an opener went in vain as the English opening batsman’s unbeaten century could not take his team over the line. Chasing a small total of 196 runs against West Indies, the English batsmen completely failed to counter the Carribean pacers. They were falling like a pack of cards but Stewart held firm from one end. He came agonisingly close to taking his team over the line but eventually fell short by 3 runs as he ran out of the partners.

6. Herschelle Gibbs – 59* vs Pakistan, 28 March 2000:

Chasing 168 runs, South Africa were looking destined to achieve the total when they were 74 for 1 in the 16th over. However, Shoaib Akhtar derailed their innings by taking three wickets in the next over. The Proteas never recovered from that and were eventually dismissed for 101 runs. Only Herschelle Gibbs stood firm during the collapse, but his unbeaten innings of 59 off 79 balls could not win the match for his team.

5. Damien Martyn – 116* vs New Zealand, 3 March 2000:

Steve Waugh’s men proved no match for New Zealand pacers on an Auckland pitch that had a lot of assistance for the bowlers. The Aussies were losing wickets at regular intervals but a brilliant century from Martyn helped them to post a respectable total of 191 runs. New Zealand comfortably chased down the total in the 41st over.

4. Ridley Jacobs – 49* vs Australia, 30 May 1999:

Probably one of the most-awaited games of that world cup, the game failed to live up to its expectations as the Glenn McGrath destroyed the  West Indies batting lineup with his five-wicket haul. None of the batsmen could apply themselves on the tough pitch as they were dismissed for a paltry 110. Only two batsmen could cross the double-digit mark, with Ridley being one of them. The wicketkeeper-batsman remained unbeaten but could not help his team get to a respectable total as he ran out of partners. In the process, he became the first West Indies batsman to carry his bat and also become the first batsman to do so a world cup.Steve Waugh’s men comfortably chased down the total in the 41st over.

3. Nick Knight – 125* vs Pakistan, 1 September 1996:

With Pakistani pacers Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram wreaking havoc, the English batsmen were falling like a pack of cards. However, Knight held firm from one end and played an unbeaten knock of 125 runs to help his team post 246 runs. His knock of 125 runs is still the highest by any opening batsman who has carried his bat. Meanwhile, Pakistan chased down the total with two balls remaining.

2. Saeed Anwar – 103* vs Zimbabwe, 22 February 1995:

Chasing 219, Pakistan were in a spot of bother after being reduced to 107 for 4. Their situation worsened when they were reduced to 175 for 6. However, Anwar held firm from one end and despite losing his partners from one end, he ensured that Pakistan do not lose the match by playing an unbeaten knock of 103. The match ended in a tie.

 1. Grant Flower -84* vs England, 15 December 1994:
