Riding on centuries from JP Duminy and Dean Elgar, South Africa finished the Day 3 of the Perth Test against Australia in pole position. Resuming at their overnight score 104/2, the visitors were 390/6 at the stumps on Day 3, with an overall lead of 388.

Here are some of the statistical highlights of Day 3 of the First Test:
- South Africa opening batsman Dean Elgar and JP Duminy put on a 250-run partnership for the third wicket. It proved to be South Africa’s second highest Test partnership for any wicket on the Australian soil. The record for the highest partnership is being held by Eddie Barlow and Graeme Pollock (341 runs).
Also, this huge partnership (250) was the South Africa’s third highest partnership for any wicket in their second innings of a Test match. The top two partnerships in this category are: 330 runs between Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis for third wicket (against New Zealand at Johannesburg in 2007) and 251 runs between Herschelle Gibbs and Jacques Kallis for third wicket (against West Indies at Cape Town in 2004).
- Dean Elgar and JP Duminy hit centuries during South Africa’s second innings in this Test. Duminy scored 141 runs while Elgar scored 127 runs. On the Australian soil, it was the seventh time that two South African batsmen hit centuries in the same Test innings. Till the date, there are no such incidents where more than two South African batsmen hit tons in the same Test innings in Australia.
- At stumps on Day 3, South Africa were 390/6. Currently, it is the second highest third innings Test total by a visiting team at Perth. The highest third innings Test total by a visiting team at Perth is 569 which was also hit by South Africa in 2012.
- 414/4 is the highest fourth innings total at Perth Test, which was made by South Africa to in 2008. South Africa won that Test by six wickets.
