Stats Attack – Most Number of Centuries In a Single ODI Innings

Scoring a century is a cherish-able feeling for any player around the world. From Sachin Tendulkar, who has 100 tons to his name in international cricket to Shane Warne, who never got a chance to witness that feeling in his playing days, scoring a century has often been a batsman’s most desirable dream to achieve in cricket.

One century an innings is usual, two centuries an innings is great but three centuries an innings is something remarkable. Let’s have a look at teams, who in history of the game got most individual hundreds in a single innings of an ODI match:

  1. South Africa vs West Indies (Johannesburg, 2015)

Ab de Villiers celebrates after completing his century against West Indies.

Owing a reputation of producing fine batsmen over the years, South Africa hold the pole position in this list. In the second ODI against West Indies at Johannesburg in 2015, South Africa, who were asked to bat first, wreaked havoc as they plundered 439/2 in their 50 overs.

Each of their top three batsmen – Hashim Amla, Rilee Rossouw and AB de Villiers scored a century, making it as the first instance in history where two or more batsmen crossed the three-figure mark in the same inning. Apart from this, skipper de Villiers also notched up the fastest ton ever in just 31 balls, smashing nine boundaries and 16 sixes.

South Africa won the match hands down by 148 runs and de Villiers was adjudged as the Man-of-the-Match.

2. South Africa vs India (Mumbai, 2015)

Ab de Villiers celebrates after scoring a hundred against India at Mumbai.

Months after creating a world record against West Indies in their own backyard, South Africa returned to repeat the heroics against India in October 2015. Playing the decider of the bilateral series at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the Proteas were asked to bat first by Indian skipper MS Dhoni.

Scripting one of the most destructive innings on sub-continent soil, the visitors plugged in 438 runs on the board courtesy Quinton de Kock, Faf du Plessis and Ab de Villiers, who all scored a century. India were left searching for answers as five of their seven bowlers bowled at an economy rate of above seven, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar conceding more than 100 runs in his 10 overs.

South Africa won the match by 214 runs and sealed the ODI series 3-2.

3. Pakistan vs India (Multan, 1982)

Mohsin Khan of Pakistan.

The first ever match where more than one batsman scored a hundred in a same innings was played between India and Pakistan at Multan in 1982. In the second ODI of the series, Pakistan batted first after winning the toss.

After losing a wicket early, Mohsin Khan, who was joined by Zaheer Abbas, put on a 205-run partnership, which also included a hundred from Abbas. Overs later, Mohsin completed his ton too and the pair made history in cricket.

India lost the second match by 37 runs. For his magnificent ton, Zaheer Abbas was adjudged Man-of-the-match.

4. India vs Pakistan (Lahore, 1982)

Zaheer Abbas of Pakistan.

It did not take too long for history to repeat itself as Pakistan, who became the first team to have two centurions in the Multan match, did it again in the next game. In the 3rd ODI, the hosts won the toss and asked India to field first.

Zaheer Abbas continued his good form as he notched up yet another ton. He was later accompanied by another legendary batsman Javed Miandad, who rose his bat after completing a century in the same innings too.

Back then it was only the second instance in history when a side had two centuries makers in the same match. India won the match by 18 runs. Miandad walked away with the Player of the Match award.

5. India vs West Indies (Jamshedpur, 1983)

Vivian Richards of West Indies.

Months later after defeating West Indies in the 1983 World Cup final, India were taken aback during an ODI game in Jamshedpur in 1983. In the 4th ODI of the bilateral series, West Indies smacked 333 runs. Opener Gorden Greenidge scored a hundred while Vivian Richards, known to be the most devastating batsman of all time, notched one too. The innings from the latter’s bat brought crowd to their feet as he scored 149 in just 99 balls, smashing bowlers for 20 fours and three sixes.

That match went down in history as the third recorded match where two players from a same side completed a ton and unfortunately it was India on the receiving end again. West Indies won the match by 104 runs and Richards was awarded as the Man-of-the-match.
