Stats Details: Ashwin’s 6 Man-of-the-Series awards in Tests

Indian star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin earned another Man-of-the-Series award in the recently ended Test series against West Indies in West Indies. It was his 6th Man-of-the-series in his Test career which are the most no. of Man-of-the-Series by an Indian cricketer in Test. Former Indian cricketers Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar are in a joint second position in this list with 5 Man-of-the-Series each in their Test career each. The most interesting thing is that Ashwin becomes the record-holder even playing fewer Test series than both the legendary Indian cricketers.

Till date, Ashwin has played only 13 Test series (36 Tests) out of which India won 7, lost 5 and drew only 1 Test series. Out of India’s 7 winning Test series, Ashwin was awarded Man-of-the-series for 6 times. Only in the 2013 Test series between India and West Indies in India, Ashwin not won Man-of-the-Series award despite India won the Test series. Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma was awarded Man-of-the Series in that Test series.

Now we briefly look out the Test series where Ashwin has won Man-of-the-Series.

  1. India vs West Indies, 3-match Test series in India (2011) – India won by 2-0 (Debutant Test series for Ashwin)

In November 2011, West Indies played 3-match Test series against India in India where India won the series by 2-0. It was the Ashwin’s debutant Test series. With two 5-wicket haul, Ashwin took total 22 wickets in that series and also scored total 121 runs with his bat including a century. After these kind of all-round performances, Ashwin was selected for Man-of-the-Series award in his debutant Test series.

Ashwin made his Test debut in the 1st Test of that series at Delhi. With a match winning bowling figure of 6/47 in West Indies second innings of that match, Ashwin took total 9 wickets in his debutant Test match. With his great bowling performance, Ashwin was elected for Man-of-the-Match award in his debutant Test match.

In the next match (2nd Test), Ashwin picked up total 4 wickets while in the last Test (3rd Test) of the series, Ashwin took total 9 wickets (including a fifer) with a century. Ashwin also won Man-of-the-Match award in the last Test for his all-round performances.    

  1. India vs New Zealand, 2-match Test series in India (2012) – India won by 2-0

Ashwin booked his second Man-of-the-Series during New Zealand’s tour in India in 2012. New Zealand played a 2-match Test series in that tour where they lost in both matches.

In the first Test, Ashwin took total 12 wickets with twice 5-wicket haul (also was selected for Man-of-the-Match award) and also took total 6 wickets in the second and last Test including a fifer.  In that 2-match Test series, Ashwin picked up 18 wickets (3 times 5-wicket haul; once 10-wicket haul) and also scored 69 runs with his bat along with 69.00 average (2 innings). With his impressive bowling performance, Ashwin won Man-of-the-Series in that Test series.  

  1. India vs Australia (Border-Gavaskar Trophy), 4-match Test series in India (2013) – India won by 4-0

During the Australia’s tour of India in 2013, the visitors played 4 Tests where they lost in all the 4 Tests. Ashwin’s bowling was one of important reason for India to successfully complete whitewash over Australia in that series. Though Ashwin did not put score with his bat as he scored only total 20 runs in that series but took total 29-wickets in that series as he became the player of that series.

During that Test series, Ashwin took 12 wickets in the 1st Test (2 times 5-wicket haul), 6 wickets in the second Test (once 5-wicket haul), 4 wickets in the third Test and 7 wickets in the fourth and final Test (once 5-wicket haul).   

  1. Sri Lanka vs India, 3-match Test series in Sri Lanka (2015) – India won by 2-1

Ashwin bagged his 4th Man-of-the-Series in Test career in 2015 during Sri Lanka tour which was also the off-spinner’s 1st Man-of-the-Series at outside home soil. In that series, India played 3 Tests against hosts Sri Lanka where India won the series by 2-1 after losing the first Test.

In the first Test at Galle, Ashwin completed a 10-wicket haul in that match (including a 5-wicket haul) but ended in a losing side. In the second Test at Colombo (PSS), Ashwin took a fifer and ended with 7 wickets in that match while India clinched a victory in that Test.

In the third and final Test at Colombo (SSC), Ashwin took total 4 wickets (all in the Sri Lanka’s second innings) and also scored a half-century.

Ashwin took total 21 wickets in that Test series with his bowling and also scored 94 runs with his bat.  

  1. India vs South Africa (Freedom Trophy), 4-match Test series in India (2015) – India won by 3-0

During the Freedom Trophy 2015, which was played between the hosts India and visitors South Africa, Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin totally dominated over the visitors. It was the 4-match Test series where India won by 3-0 at the end.

In the first Test, Ashwin took total 8 wickets with a 5-wicket haul. Then Ashwin took 4 wickets in the washed out Test at Bangalore which was the second Test of that series.

In the third Test, Ashwin picked up total 12 wickets in that match with twice 5-wicket haul. Ashwin won the player of the match award for his outstanding bowling effort in that match.

In the final Test (4th Test) of that series, Ashwin grabbed another fifer as he took total 7 wickets in that match. Also he scored a half-century in that Test.

Ashwin took total 31 wickets in that 4-match Test series and for his destructive bowling effort, Ashwin was selected for Man-of-the-Series award. Apart from those destructive bowling effort, Ashwin also scored 101 runs (including a half-century) in that Test series with his bat.

  1. West Indies vs India, 4-match Test series in West Indies (2016) – India won by 2-0

This was the latest completed series where the visitors India beat West Indies by 2-0 in the 4-match Test series. Ashwin won his 6th Man-of-the-Series award in Test at the end of this series and became the most no. of Man-of-the-Series winner in Test as an Indian cricketer. The important part is that Ashwin won this Man-of-the-Series award for his all-round performances throughout the series.

In the first Test at North Sound, Ashwin scored a terrific century and also took total 7 wickets (all in the West Indies second innings) in that match. For his outstanding performances, Ashwin won the Man-of-the-Match award at the end of that Test.

In the second Test at Kingston, Ashwin took total 6 wickets (including a 5-wicket haul).

In the third Test at Gros Islet, Ashwin again scored an impressive and game-changing century and also took 3 wickets. For his outstanding batting performance, Ashwin won Man-of-the-Match award in that Test.

Ashwin took only 1 wicket in the final Test at Port of Spain, which was destroyed the full Test due to poor outfield.

At the end of the series, Ashwin clinched the Man-of-the-Series award after scoring 235 runs (including 2 centuries) with his bat and taking 17 wickets (including twice 5-wicket haul) with his bowling.
