Stats: Top 5 bowlers with most wickets in 2015

  • Captain Virat Kohli has a reason to feel proud as his strategy to deploy three spinners once again succeeded in the “Gandhi-Mandela” series in the third match at VCAS, Jamtha, Nagpur. The Indian spin trio- Ravichandran Ashwin, Amit Mishra and Ravindra Jadeja earned India a 124 runs victory at Nagpur and clinched the four-match Test series 2-0. This is India’s first home Test series victory against South Africa after 2004-05 series as the last series were squared by South Africa.

Ashwin after his second five-wicket haul in the match said, “Batsmen go out there to score a 100, ask Kohli. I go out there to take a five-wicket haul with the ball”.

So, for the third time Indian spinners bamboozled South Africa in this time. And this time they were bamboozled for 79 runs, the lowest total in Indian soil. This score also the lowest by a Test playing nation against India.

In a Test where two five-wicket haul and two four wickets haul dominating the statistics batsmen found it difficult to cope with the whirling Nagpur pitch.

Indian spinners Ashwin and South African leggie has taken fifers while Ravindra Jadeja and Simon Harmer grabbed four wickets each in the match.

India put 215 runs in the first innings which is also the highest total in this series. India got 136 runs first innings lead. But, in the second inning India were bundled out for 173 while South Africa batsmen showed resistance to defy India’ s victory in the third day of the Test.

Ravindra Jadeja was outspin by Hashim Amla and for a while by Faf du Plessis. They showed their guts and played 39 run innings respectively. But, leg spinner did not let the pressure go as he grabbed the wicket of Hashim Amla and Du Plessis.

Mishra’s assistance helped Ashwin to clean up South Africa immediately. From 58 for Amla and Du Plessis built 72 run fifth wicket partnership that delayed India’s inevitable victory.

Ashwin has taken 7 wickets which helped him to be the leading wicket taker for two consecutive series. His current  series tally is 24. He was also the leading wicket taker in Sri Lanka with 20 wicket haul in three Test match series.

Ashwin’s unplayable bowling reflected in AB de Villiers’s batting. The South African looked bemuse while playing Ashwin. After surviving 21 balls trapped lbw off Ashwin.

Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar, who shot back at a group of cricketers who criticised Nagpur pitch, said, “Ashwin’s ball to get AB was brilliant. Completely a bowler’s wicket, nothing to do with the pitch.”

Ashwin has become the highest wicket taker of this year. He has taken 55 wickets, which is 4 wickets more than England’s Stuart Broad’s haul.
