Steve O’Keefe Eager To Perform In India, Seeks Monty Panesar, Daniel Vettori’s Advice

Seems like someone in the Australian camp is putting in some hard yards to find success in the upcoming tour to India. Steve O’Keefe, the left-arm spinner sought advice from two of the better spinners in sub-conditions in past, Monty Panesar and Daniel Vettori.

In the wake to end their torrid run against the sub-continent sides in their own backyard, Australia has begun their preparatory camp in Dubai. Apart from sweating it out in the heat, the players are also making some notes of how to come on top of Indian batsmen’s, who by the glare on their recent performances are surely in some good form.

Two of Australia’s front-line spinners Nathan Lyon and Steve O’Keefe will be under some pressure to put up an equivalent or relatively better performances over their counterparts Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in the dusty conditions in India.

Stop the boundaries, build pressure and attack the stumps, Monty poured some piece of advice on the two ageing spinners. Having found success during his tenure in India, Panesar has asked the pair to fluctuate their pace and to not allow batsmen’s to score runs, which would eventually increase their chances of picking wickets.

O’Keefe claimed Monty has asked them to adapt to the conditions and prefer to keep things simple and not over do it. He said, ‘Monty has had a lot of success in India and it was great to work with him. The keys he talked about was being adaptable.’

“You’re going to get different wickets, albeit they will be generally slow and spinning, but at times they can play a bit differently, might be a little bit quicker, one might bounce a bit more. He talked about being able to adapt really quickly and on the spot and also being able to take away the batter’s scoring options in regards to boundaries… building pressure through being a little bit defensive, which was something that was, I guess, refreshing to hear.”

It’s never too late to get a good advice and if it’s coming from Vettori and Herath together, we wouldn’t want to miss. O’Keefe said they have asked us (Me and Lyon) to challenge the batsmen’s defense early on as when you achieve that, walking through the batting order becomes more easier.

He further admitted that India is a great batting side but Australia can find success if they execute their plans well.

“The main things you get from those guys is challenging the batter’s defense, and if you can continually put the ball in the right area, given these conditions will spin more than what we’re used to at home, that will help us. It’s about building pressure and not being overawed. They’re a class team, they’re exceptional batters at home and it’s going to be a big job. But I have no doubt if we get it right for a sustained longer periods we can do some damage.”
