Steve Waugh Urges Australia To Have A Steady Opening Combination For India Tour

With the much anticipated tour of India around the corner, former Australia Test captain Steve Waugh has advised the Kangaroos to have a steady opening combination for the tour. During Australia’s ongoing third Test against Pakistan in Sydney, Waugh mentioned that the pair of David Warner and Matt Renshaw should ideally open the batting in India and backed the duo to do well.

The Australian openers scored excellent centuries at Sydney as the hosts battered Pakistan into disarray. Waugh was in awe of the young Renshaw and went on to back him to succeed on the derelict Indian shores. Citing temperament as a vital factor, Waugh felt that this pair certainly deserves to open in India as the two openers complement each other quite well.

“They look like they’ve got good temperament,” Waugh said. “That’s the main thing in Test cricket. You’ve got to have the temperament to get through the tough periods, to think smartly when you’re out there in the middle and they’ve both shown they’re street-smart, which is really important. It will test them in different ways in India , technique, conditions and different pitches. It’s been nice timing for Australian cricket. They’ve played four Tests together, they’re winning and they’re playing well, so they’re going over there with confidence.”

The former skipper also spoke highly about leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed and backed for his inclusion for the India tour. “Agar, he’s a huge talent and did well in his first Test match Waugh added. He says he’s an all-rounder so he’ll add something to the squad. Someone like Fawad Ahmed I’d like to see in the picture but he doesn’t seem to get a mention. I think he could do really well on Indian pitches but he seems to be a fair way out of calculation.”

Waugh concluded by mentioning that the selectors should persist with Matthew Wade as the wicket-keeper for some time. “The selectors obviously believe (Wade) is a good keeper as well as a good batsman,” Waugh said. “To replace Peter Nevill, you wouldn’t do that without thinking it through because Nevill’s a fantastic keeper and a good batsman.”
