Steven Smith Shines As Australia Rout New Zealand By 68 Runs in First ODI at SCG

Australia beat arch-rivals New Zealand by 68 runs as visitors were bundled out for 256 runs in the 1st One-day international match of Chappell-Hadlee Trophy in Sydney on a Sunday evening. So much so, Australia ended its five-match unproductive run in ODIs.

Considered to do well in the shorter format, in October this year, Australia lost their all 5 ODIs against South Africa and this was the tough challenge for the hosts against a well-balanced side.

The stroke-maker Martin Guptill showed some stiff resistance but unfortunately that was not enough to sail the ship for long before scoring gutsy 114 off 102 runs while perishing to right-arm leggie Adam Zampa

New Zealand required something big to step on the gas to go past their arch-rival Australia’s 325-run total and that did not happen this time around.

As Guptill slammed his 11th One-day international century, the late onslaught from Matt Henry off 27 from 15 balls and Colin Munro’s 49 off 59 balls did not help the visitors to cross the line.

Munro, who tried to swing hard, also broke his bat on the bowling of Marsh. As Kiwis were relying on middle-order, Jimmy Neesham fell to Starc while scoring almost run-a-ball 34 off 36.

Josh Hazlewood picked three wickets and Mitchell Marsh, Adam Zampa bagged two wickets each with Mitchell Starc settling with one.

Earlier, after winning the toss, Australia set a target of 325 for New Zealand owing to some sloppy fielding.

Being dropped on 13 and 152, Smith hit 14 fours and four sixes to register his seventh ODI ton.

Travis Head was dropped 7 by Matt Henry while putting down a sitter at the mid-off region.

David Warner scored 24 off 29 balls and George Bailey was gathered beautifully down the leg by gloveman PJ Watling on 17.

Australian skipper was supported by Travis Head as both put on a 127-run stand for the fifth wicket after Mitchell Marsh got run-out.

Smith became the seventh Australian highest individual scorer alongside former captain Ricky Ponting in ODIs

The list includes allrounder Shane Watson (185*), Matthew Hayden (181*), David Warner (178 and 173), Mark Waugh (173), Adam Gilchrist (172) followed by Ricky Pointing and Smith’s (164).

While setting his career best score, Captain Steven Smith smashed Kiwis bowler all around the park before holding out to a skier on 164 off 157 balls on the bowling off Trent Boult.

Now, Smith holds the record of highest One-day international score made at the SCG, surpassing South Africa’s AB de Villiers (162 off 66), he scored in 2015 World Cup match against West Indies.

Wicket-keeper batsman Matthew Wade scored 38 off 22 balls.

“I had a bit of luck, but you have to take that and make the most it. Nice to get a big score on my home ground. I love batting here, it’s a great place to play and great to play in front of my family,” Smith said.

Trent Boult, Matt Henry and Jimmy Nesham picked two scalps each and debutant Lockie Ferguson bagged his first.

However, all-rounder Glenn Maxwell was sidelined for the 1st ODI in the Australian eleven after being fined over the disrespectful comments on Matthew Wade.
