Indian team kicked off the home season in style by clean sweeping the New Zealand in the first Test series of the long home season. With each passing day and each passing game, the dominance of Indian team grew manifolds and in the end, New Zealand had no other way just to surrender in front of Indians. R. Ashwin, the superman for India was the highlight of the series with 27 wickets in the series bagging second consecutive Man of the Series award of his career.
Before going into the final Test match, team India was already at the top spot as they dethroned Pakistan with a win over New Zealand at Kolkata. They went on to crush the Kiwis in the third and the final Test as well but a there was a surprise for Indian team which awaited them at the other end of the door.
In the morning, ICC made it official that ICC mace will be given to the Indian team by the virtue of being at the top spot in ICC rankings and the champions Indian team was presented with the mace just after completion of the presentation ceremony on the fourth and the ultimate final day of the final Test match against New Zealand.
Legendary batsman, ICC hall of Famer and former captain of Indian cricket team, Sunil Gavaskar, awarded the ICC mace to India on behalf of ICC. Whilst presenting the mace to Indian skipper Virat Kohli, Sunil Gavaskar had a short message for the leader of young Test brigade. There were smiles on the face of Sunil Gavaskar so as on the face of Indian captain Virat Kohli. It was a moment for the Indian team to enjoy their share of celebrations as they were to be on the top spot a month before but a rain spoilt game deprived them a chance to do so.
It is a chance for the Indian team to retain the mace for long as they have 10 more Test matches remaining in the season and it is golden opportunity for them to keep the mace for as long as possible.
It is the third time when ICC has to award the mace in a period of 3 months as earlier they awarded mace to Australian captain Steve Smith in Sri Lanka. The Smith led team was clean swept by Lankans thereafter and it was Pakistan who topped the ICC rankings after that. The mace then travelled to Pakistan where the Pakistan team was presented with mace at a function in Gadaffi stadium.
Finally, the mace reached its ultimate destinations and then Indian players put their hands on that mace which is a symbol of dominance and power.
