Suresh Raina was one of the fittest players when he came into the team. He soon became the backbone of Indian middle order. For a long time, he was India’s middle order mainstay. He won many crucial matches for India. However, a slump in his batting form has ruled him out from a contention in the Indian team.
He last played an ODI in 2015 and had struggled to book a spot in the side since then. He has been struggling with his fitness as well. A recent report suggested that he was dropped from the team as he had failed to clear the ‘Yo-Yo’ fitness test along with Yuvraj Singh. However, these reports were later on shrugged off. He has been putting in the hard yards to get back into the Indian teams.
Raina played most of his international career under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. Not only international, but he also played under Dhoni while playing for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. Dhoni is hailed as ‘Captain Cool’, but Raina in a recent interview revealed that the former Indian captain was not as cool as he appeared on television,
“There is no emotion in his eyes. Despite not wearing sunglasses, you cannot figure it out. We will be like ‘come on, man. show us some reaction, there is no emotion in his eyes. Despite not wearing sunglasses, you cannot figure it out. We will be like ‘come on, man. show us some reaction”
The southpaw also applauded Dhoni’s leadership qualities as well:
“He (Dhoni) is a very good leader. He knows what’s going to happen next. He keeps Plan A, Plan B, Plan C ready for every situation. He carries all of them during the play. He strategises the things a night before and executes according to the situation.”
The duo enjoyed exceptional success while playing for CSK in the previous seasons but their reunion is highly unlikely. According to recent reports, franchisees will be allowed t retained two Indian and one player for the upcoming season and the CSK are looking forward to retaining MS Dhoni, Ravichandran Ashwin and Faf Du Plessis.
