The innings that ended with the drowning ship Titanic: John Thayer

The ship of dreams, the most tragic end of a man-made brilliance till date, the romantic story of how Jack gave away his life to save Rose, his lady love – It is Titanic. The name reminds of a lot of things, the historic incident, the movie, Leonardo Di Caprio, Celine Dion’s voice. But why are we talking Titanic at Sportzwiki today? Because Cricket was present there, without making much noise. Among the 1517 people that the ship killed, there was John Thayer – the one and the only cricketer to die with Titanic.

John Thayer and Marion Thayer

Born in The USA, as an heir of a family popular for playing cricket, Thayer made his mark in the first class cricket during the span of 1881-1886. Appearing in 7 first class matches, he made 138 runs and took a total of 6 wickets with his career best figure 3 for 17 runs.

Following his cricketing career, Thayer got himself engaged into business. Just a few days before turning 50, he along with his family decided to get back to USA boarding on the royal cruise: Titanic. When the ship hit the iceberg, the decision proved to be life-changing, or rather life taking, as Thayer could not be saved.

Before his own life ended, he secured his family, though. His wife Marion, along with her maid, was provided a life-boat and they survived thus. His son, Jack Thayer (not Rose’s love interest), jumped off the ship. He eventually swam and got hold of a turned boat and he was also saved. But John gave away his life with Titanic.
