With the eight edition of the Indian Premier League coming to a closure, the viewers can shift their focus back to international cricket. The chants of “India India!” will soon replace the echoes of “Mumbai Mumbai”! However, like every other season of the IPL, in this season too there were some lovely moments. There were moments of sheer fun, laughter and anguish. While some of the moments were ironic, a majority of them portrayed the sport in a positive light.

In this article, we rewind back to IPL 8, and gaze through the most memorable moments –

8. Nair – Southee Tag Team Work:

We begin our list with the most innovative catch of the season. This incident occurred in the encounter played between the Kings XI Punjab and the Rajasthan Royals in Pune. The Royals had almost sealed the game when George Bailey slogged a low full toss. The ball was travelling when Tim Southee caught it, only to realize that he was just a whisker away from the long on boundary. Southee’s first attempt was to ensure that it wasn’t a six. Southee threw the ball back inside the boundary rope when Karun Nair slid across the surface to catch the throw on the full. It was a spectacular sight as everyone stood amazed by the presence of mind of Nair and Southee.

7. Tahir and his famous Three Punche

This was not just one particular moment but a series of moments. Imran Tahir was simply on fire in the first half of the IPL. Even though the Delhi Daredevils were struggling, Tahir was ruling the wickets chart with his leg spin. Each time Tahir took a wicket; he would celebrate wildly in ecstasy and sprint while punching thrice in the air. Watching him celebrate was an inspiring sight for sure. It made people realize about Tahir’s love and passion for the game. We do hope that Tahir continues with his wild celebration style!

6. Chris Gayle’s tribute to CR7:

There is absolutely no doubt that Chris Gayle is a staunch fan of Real Madrid. The brawny Jamaican made it crystal clear when he got to his ton against the Kings XI in Bangalore. Gayle was at his devastating best against the helpless Punjabis in Bangalore. As soon as Gayle got to his century, he mimicked the celebration style of Cristiano Ronaldo and jumped across the turf with both his hands down. The crowd loved every bit of it!

5. AB de Villiers’s century moment:

AB De Villiers simply decimated the Mumbai Indians bowling in their fortress at the Wankhede Stadium. De Villiers’ batting had every aspect of brutality and unfortunately for the Mumbai Indians’ bowlers, it was their turn to be on the receiving end. The South African got to his ton, and when he removed his helmet to celebrate, it was an unforgettable sight. A billion dollar smile from AB De Villiers was simply too lovely a sight to ignore. The smile spoke volumes about AB’s down to earth character. No over the top celebrations, but just a gentle smile. As a matter of fact, Kohli celebrated De Villiers’ ton more than De Villiers himself. That just strengthened their bond!

4. Dinesh Karthik vs Kumar Dharmasena:

Even though this moment did not occur in positivity, it will still be etched in the memories of the fans for several reasons. The game was played between the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Sunrisers Hyderabad in Hyderabad. It had already been a frustrating evening as the rain had been a dampener. None the less, a rain curtailed game began. Towards the end of the first innings, fielding for the Royal Challengers had become extremely cumbersome. This was due to the dampness in the outfield. While trudging back to the dugout, Bangalore’s Dinesh Karthik was seen getting animated towards umpire Kumar Dharmasena. Karthik had simply lost his cool and it seemed that Karthik was literally lecturing Dharmasena. The two were finally separated when they reached the dugout. Karthik though, couldn’t escape from a fine.

3. Pollard Tapes it up:

This without second thoughts has to be the funniest moment of IPL 8. The unforgettable incident occurred in Bangalore when the Royal Challengers locked horns with the Mumbai Indians. During the early overs of the Royal Challengers’ chase, Kieron Pollard while moving from one spot to another muttered a few words to Chris Gayle. Gayle reacted with a smile. It was their usual friendly banter and not anything else. The leg umpire though, thought otherwise and asked Pollard to watch his actions. Pollard was shell shocked as it was banter and nothing else. In the next over, Pollard was seen taping his mouth with a thick cello tape. He did so in order to mock the umpire. Within minutes, social media was flooded with memes of Pollard taping his mouth.

2. The Lagaan moment:

David Warner might not have watched the movie Lagaan, but he surely experienced the Lagaan moment! The incident occurred during the last over of the Bangalore and Hyderabad game in Hyderabad. The game was in the balance as Royal Challengers needed four from the last two balls. Kohli smashed Bhuvneshwar Kumar over his head on a length ball. David Warner had caught the ball while he was near the boundary. Warner began celebrating as that could well have been the game for the home team. Little did he know that he actually touched the rope while celebrating. This was very much like the movie Lagaan, when the British skipper caught Aamir Khan, only to touch the boundary while celebrating.

1. Kohli bowing down to Sarfaraz Khan:

All hail the ultimate moment of IPL 8! It was an encounter played between the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Rajasthan Royals in Bangalore. The hosts batted very well to post a mammoth total of 200 on the board. It was mainly due to the brilliance of the teenager Sarfaraz Khan towards the end. Sarfaraz aged 17, batted with immense maturity and displayed a lot of power with precision. Khan was batting like a sensation and all his hits were clean. The teenager ended his innings on 45* off 21. As he walked towards the dugout, out came Virat Kohli. Kohli bowed down to Sarfaraz and smiled. The teenager was too humbled by the moment as he went past and hugged his skipper. This surely was the best sight of IPL 8, as it showed Kohli’s character. It made Kohli’s love and affection for his teammates clear.
