Three Spinners Ideal For India Tour: Mitchell Johnson

Former Australia left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Johnson has urged Cricket Australia selectors to go spin heavy for four-match Test series, scheduled to start from February 23.

“They [Indian pitches] are bunsen burners at the moment, they’ve been turning a fair bit, South Africa lost a Test series there,” Johnson was quoted by The Age Sport.

However, Australia have named four spinners for the tour – Mitchell Swepson, Nathan Lyon, Steve O’Keefe and Ashton Agar.

The 35-year-old Johnson has stated the visitors need to acclimatize to the conditions at the earliest so as to make a mark.

“It’s going to be very interesting … I don’t know whether they go for two or three spinners in a Test,” Johnson said.

The Queensland-born Johnson played an important role for Perth Scorchers before winning the Big Bash League final on Saturday against Sydney Sixers by nine wickets.

“I’ve just got a feeling we’ll see something different, something maybe special. We’ll see a very different side to what we’re normally used to – we’re going to see more spin bowling over there,” Johnson added.

He expects the slow-bowlers from Australia to do well in India as it has become a norm to announce spin heavy teams for the Tests in sub-continent.

“That’s a good thing because you’ve got to play the conditions in India. The stats say that our quicks are better over there but mostly it’s the quicks that bowl over there, we don’t really bowl a lot of spin,” Johnson revealed.

“It was Shane Warne before that and over the last 10 or so years there’s been a lot of changes with our spin bowling,” he said.

Johnson bowled brilliantly in the semi-final of the BBL 06 against Melbourne Stars, where he picked three wickets.

“It’s just a really good tournament, I was probably one that never embraced Twenty20 cricket when I was playing international cricket but now that’s all I’m playing, that’s very enjoyable,” Johnson concluded.

The first Test of the four-match series starts from February 23 at Pune.
