India’s limited overs skipper MS Dhoni was invited to unveil the Tamil Nadu Premier League trophy in Chennai on Thursday (August 18). The glittering ceremony was also attended by Tamil Nadu Cricket Association president N Srinivasan along with TNPL chairman PS Raman, BCCI treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry , Hyderabad Cricket Association president Arshad Ayub, Kerala Cricket Association president TC Mathew and Cricket Association of Bengal treasurer Biswarup Dey.

The captains of the eight teams in the league were also introduced during the ceremony amid great cheers from the fans. However, the loudest cheer was saved for their star man-MS Dhoni. And it was not surprising given Dhoni’s connection with the city. With Chennai Super Kings he became the most decorated skipper of the Indian Premier League. One of the most successful captains of all time, Dhoni led the team from Chennai to two IPL titles(2010, 2011) and two Champions League Twenty20 titles(2010,2014). And former BCCI president Srinivasan said it was fitting that Dhoni unveiled the  trophy .

“When we wanted to have a function to unveil the trophy , the most fitting person to do the honours was Dhoni. What fills our hearts is the fact that in spite of his preoccupations, he has found the time to attend the event. When we were able to reach him, he said yes.True to his word, he has turned up on time,” Srinivasan said.

While talking to the journalists during the ceremony, Dhoni said that the upcoming league will help the youngsters to perform at the biggest level.

“It will take cricket to a lot of cities which are not used to watching big games. There are a lot of day-night games planned, something that will encourage youngsters to come up and say -`I want to play there, I want to be a part of the team’. All these small things really help players to become big in life. Once you are a part of a team that is playing, you will want to represent your state (TNCA) and then the ultimate aim -to play for the country . It will act as a motivation for the youngsters and achieve success in the tournament will also boost their confidence,” Dhoni said.

The TNPL anthem Damkutla Damkutla was also released at the launch.
