Top 10 captains who won most number international matches

Captains are one the most important part in the team game like cricket. A captain is a superior of a team who has always taken responsibility for his team’s performances. In the international cricket, the responsibilities are very high for a captain as his team’s destiny mostly depended on his each and every decisions.

With these biggest responsibilities, some captains became very successful in the international cricket. In this article we will briefly discuss about the top 10 captains who won most international matches.

 

10. Arjuna Ranatunga (Sri Lanka): Matches – 249; Won – 101

Former World Cup winning Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga won 101 international matches (12 Tests and 89 ODIs) out of 249 international matches (lost – 114, tied – 1, drawn – 25 and no results – 8). In 11 years long international captaincy career (1988-1999), Ranatunga won 12 Tests and 89 ODIs. Under his captaincy, Sri Lanka won 1996 World Cup.

  1. Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka/Asia): Matches – 186; Won – 101

Mahela Jayawardene was another best former Sri Lankan captain in international cricket history. Mahela Jayawardene’s international captaincy career ran from 2004 to 2013, his team won 101 (18 Tests, 71 ODIs and 12 T20Is) international matches out of 186 matches (lost – 67, tied – 2, drawn – 8 and no results – 8). Apart from leading the Sri Lankan team, Jayawardene also led Asia XI in the international cricket.

  1. Mohammad Azharuddin (India): Matches – 221; Won – 104

Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin was one of the successful Indian captain in history. Serving as an Indian captain from 1990 to 1999, Azharuddin won 104 international matches (14 Tests and 90 ODIs) out 221 matches (lost – 90, tied – 2, drawn – 19 and no results – 6). Out of those 104 winning matches, 14 were in Tests and other 90 were in ODIs.

  1. Steve Waugh (Australia): Matches – 163; Won – 108

Former Australian World Cup winning captain Steve Waugh was one of the best captain in the cricket world. Under his captaincy (1997-2004), Australia won 108 matches (41 Tests and 67 ODIs) out of 163 international matches (lost – 44, tied – 3, drawn – 7 and no results – 1). Australia won 1999 World Cup under Steve Waugh’s captaincy.

  1. Hansie Cronje (South Africa): Matches – 191; Won – 126

Former South African cricketer Hansie Cronje was one of the best international captain during his era. Cronje served as a captain for South African team between 1994 and 2000. He was protease captain for 191 international matches (lost – 46, tied – 1, drawn – 15 and no results – 3) where South Africa won 126 matches (27 Tests and 99 ODIs).

  1. Stephen Fleming (New Zealand): Matches – 303; Won – 128

Former New Zealand cricketer Stephen Fleming led his national side from 1997 to 2007. Under his captaincy, New Zealand won 128 matches (28 Tests, 98 ODIs and 2 T20Is) out of 303 international matches (lost – 135, tied – 2, drawn – 25 and no results – 13).

Under Allan Border’s captaincy, Australia won their first World Cup in 1987. Former Australian cricketer Allan Border captained Australian cricket for 271 international matches (lost – 89, tied – 2, drawn – 38 and no results – 3) during 1984-1994. Under Border’s captaincy, his team achieved 139 international victories (32 Tests and 107 ODIs).

Former South African cricketer Graeme Smith led South Africa, ICC XI and Africa XI during his international career. In between 2003 and 2014, Smith was skipper 286 international matches (lost – 89, tied – 1, drawn – 27 and no results – 6) out of which his team won 163 matches (53 Tests, 92 ODIs and 18 T20Is). Smith is the only captain till the date who served more than 100 Tests as a skipper (109 Tests).

MS Dhoni is the only captain among these top 10 captains who is still playing international cricket even as captain. At past Dhoni also served as a Test captain of Indian team and currently he is serving as India’s captain in limited-over cricket. Dhoni’s captaincy career is still running since 2007. Till the date, Dhoni led 324 matches (lost – 117, tied – 5, drawn – 15 and no results – 12) in the international cricket out of which his team won 175 matches (27 Tests, 107 ODIs and 41 T20Is). Under Dhoni’s captaincy, India won many big, reputed and ICC recognized trophies like 2007 World T20, 2011 World Cup etc.

  1. Ricky Ponting (Australia/ICC): Matches – 324; Won – 220

Former Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting was one of the best captain in cricket world. As a captain, Ponting won most no. of international matches as well as ODI matches. Out of 324 international matches (lost – 77, tied – 2, drawn – 13 and no results – 12) as captain, Ponting won 220 matches (48 Tests, 165 ODIs and 7 T20Is). Under his captaincy, Australia won 2 consecutive World Cups in 2003 and 2007. Apart from Australia, Ponting also served as a captain of ICC XI in the international cricket.
