A test loss is quite as much equivalent to a nightmare for a Test Captain. And to add to the worries and miseries, Captains lose their ground beneath when their teams lose a test by a margin of over an innings. Recently, India lost the fourth test of the Investec series by a matter of an innings and 54 runs. Surely, this is a huge defeat. This was Dhoni’s 7th loss by a margin of an innings. Now let us draw our focus into the most number of losses by a margin of over an innings by Indian captains.

  1.        MS Dhoni: Unfortunately, the Indian skipper is leading the chart by the most number of defeats on a margin of an innings. He is a brilliant leader for sure but unfortunately, under his leadership, India did not manage to flourish much on tests in abroad.  As a captain, he lost 6 away tests and 1 home test by a margin of an innings and more.
  2.        Lala Amarnath: He was the 4th national captain in the history of Indian cricket. But his career as a cricket captain was not much of success. He captained India for 15 tests, won 2 of them and lost 7 of them and 6 were drawn. Out of the 7 losses, 5 were losses by a margin of over an innings and 3 innings defeats were at abroad while 2 were at home.
  3.        Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi: He was a great captain for India but even his name is present in the list. He captained India for 40 tests and India were victorious in 9 occasions out of those 40. India were defeated 12 times and out of those 12, 4 were losses by a margin o over an innings. 3 of them were inflicted on away soils while 1 were incurred at home.
  4.        Datta Gaekwad: He was perhaps the most unsuccessful Indian captain ever. He captained India for 4 tests and lost each of them. Out of the 4 losses, 3 were by a margin of innings. And each of the 3 losses by innings were on away soils.
  5.        Sunil Gavaskar: He is regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in the history of the game. As a captain, he was not much successful. He makes the fifth position in the list with 3 innings defeats. And as a matter of fact, all the three innings defeats were at away soils.
  6.        Bishen Singh Bedi: The great spinner from India captained India for 22 tests and under his leadership, India was defeated 5 times and out of those, 3 were innings defeats. 2 of those defeats came on away soils and 1 on home.
  7.        Ajit Wadekar: He captained India for 16 tests and incurred 8 defeats in that. Out of those 8 defeats, 2 were innings defeats on away soils.
  8.        Anil Kumble: He was the sensational spinner for India and he is the highest wicket taker for India in tests. He has been a classy player and as a captain too, he was brilliant but unfortunately he is in this list as during his days as a captain, India lost 2 tests by a margin of over an innings, one at home and one away.
  9.        Sachin Tendulkar: The Master Blaster was the captain for India in the late 90s but as a captain he was not much successful and he captained India for 25 tests and incurred 12 defeats in that. Out of those 12 defeats, 2 were innings defeats.
  10.    Srinivas Venkataraghavan: He was a player of the 70s and he did not prosper much as a captain of the Indian team. He captained the side for 5 tests and incurred 3 defeats and 2 of them were innings defeats.
