Top 10 team with most wins in Test matches

The first Test match was played way back in 1877. Regarded as the highest standard of the game, the format has witnessed numerous teams that have dominated it like no other team. The following year will see it completing 140 years of its existence and so we are presenting to you 10 countries with most wins in the longest format of the game:

10. Bangladesh:

The Bangladeshi team played its first Test match in 2000 and took 35 matches to register their first win in the longest format of the game.  Till date they have played 93 Tests. They have managed to win only 7 of them and lost 71 while 15 of the matches ended in a draw. With the team finally getting a foothold in the cricketing world they would be itching to improve their record in the Tests.

9. Zimbabwe:

The African team made its debut in the longest format of the game in 1992 and registered their first win in the eleventh match.Out of the 99 matches, they have played till date, they have managed to win 11, lost 62 and drew 26. A decent team in the late 90s, they had faced quite a few issues in this format in the last decade. They were voluntarily suspended from Test cricket between 10 June 2004 and 6 January 2005, and from 18 January 2006 until 3 August 2011. They have resumed playing Test cricket once again and would look to improve their track record.

8. Sri Lanka:

The island nation played it first competitive Test match in 1982 and registered its first victory in the 14th match. So far they have won 78 matches out of the 251 they have played. They have lost 92 matches and drew 81.

7. New Zealand:

 

New Zealand played its first Test match in 1930 and had to wait a long 42 matches to register their first victory. So far, out of 413 matches that they have played, they have emerged victorious in 85, lost 167 and drew 161. The team which was performing brilliantly in the early 2000s had a lukewarm performance in the second half of the last decade. However, under Brendon McCullum’s captaincy, they became a force to reckon with. Now under Kane Williamson, they would like to notch more wins under their belt.

6. Pakistan:

Pakistan played their first Test in 1952 and had to wait for just one match to register their maiden win in the format. Out of 399* matches that they have played, they have managed to win in 128 of them while they ended on the losing side on 113 occasions. 158 matches ended without yielding a result.

5. India:

The most successful team from Asia played their first Test match in 1932 and had registered their maiden victory in the 25th match. So far they have managed to win 130 matches out of 500 matches that they have played. They ended on the wrong side of the result on 157 occasions while managed to draw 212 matches. They have also been involved in a tied match.

4. South Africa:

The most successful African team played their first Test way back in 1889 and registered their first win in the 12th match. They did not play cricket from March 10, 1970, to November 10, 1991, after the International Cricket Conference suspended South Africa in response to the South African Government’s policy of apartheid. So far they have won 146 matches out of 402 matches played. They have lost 134 while drew 122.

3. West Indies

Few teams dominated the game like they did in the fourth quarter of the last century. West Indies played their first match in 1928 and registered their maiden victory in their sixth match. So far they have won 164 matches out of 517. They have lost 179 and drew 173.

2. England:

The pioneers of the game were involved in the first Test match played and lost it against arch-rivals Australia. They did not have to wait long to claim their maiden victory as they won their very next match. So far they have played a record 976 matches, out of which they have managed to win 350 matches. They have lost 284 while drew 342.

1.Australia:

The most successful Test team of all time were involved in the first Test match ever played and won it. So far they have won 372 matches out of 791.They were defeated on 211 occasions and they managed to draw on 206 occasions.
