Top 10 teams with most numbers of ducks in ODI

The 50-over format of cricket, arguably the most thrilling format of the game itself. However, some say Cricket has now become a batsman’s paradise, but not always it’s true. Bowlers have been enjoying a similar role in cricket.
The One Day Internationals format is a late twentieth-century development. The first 50-over match was played on 5 January 1971 between Australia and England, the venue for the historic clash was Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Even though batsmen have been thriving in modern cricket, bowlers still horrify them in the start of the innings using the new ball with a little help from the pitch. How much ever great the batsman is, on several occasions a batsman struggles to open the scoring. That’s where the greatness of the sport lies. Let’s take a look at the teams with most ducks in the One Day Internationals.

  1. Bangladesh: 314afghanistan-bangladesh_30928241

Bangladesh made their ODI debut on  31 March 1986, against Pakistan in an Asia Cup match. Before this, football used to be the most popular sport in Bangladesh, but cricket gradually gained it’s popularity – especially in urban areas – and by the late 1990s Cricket see off football to steal much of the country’s attention.

In 1997, after winning the ICC Trophy in Malaysia Bangladesh qualified for its first Cricket World Cup which was held in England in 1999 and since then they have played 312 ODI matches. The Bengal Tigers stand in the tenth spot on the list of teams with most ducks in 50-over format with 308 ducks .

  1. South Africa: 328south africa

Probably the most loved squad in world cricket, South Africa have some great records which are worth esteeming. Unfortunately in 1970, the ICC suspended South Africa from international cricket for an indefinite time due to their government’s policy of apartheid, a policy which forced the South African team  to play only against the white nations (England, Australia, New Zealand), and choose only white cricketers.

However, South Africa so far have played 555 ODIs and with 328 ducks against their name, they stand 9th in our list.

  1. Zimbabwe: 43079478099

Zimbabwe was known to the world as Rhodesia until independence from the United Kingdom in 1980.  They even boasted a national cricket team before achieving Test status. Despite the team’s overall average performances, wicket-keeper batsman Andy Flower was once regarded as the best batsman in world cricket.

During his time, Zimbabwe also came up with some great talents like  Flower’s brother Grant, and all-rounders Andy Blignaut and Heath Streak (who was later named national captain). Alister Campbell, their former captain and Murray Goodwin also showed their world-class batting brilliance. Zimbabwe have since then played 473 matches and have 430 ducks to their credit. Zimbabwe stands eighth on the list of teams with most ducks.

  1. New Zealand: 478Brendon-McCullum-New-Zealand-v-England-1st-WTbAXDRjgQ6l

New Zeeland have been consistent performers over the past few years. They made their ODI debut in 1973 but unfortunately still haven’t managed to win a world cup.

New Zealand reached the final in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 for the first time after thrashing in-form South Africa in the semi-final. Regarded as the specialists in limited overs cricket, New Zealand have till now played 703 matches with 478 ducks to their name. The black caps stand seventh on our list.

The Australian side, five times World Champions have dominated the 50-over format since its inception barring a period of 48 days in 2007.

Australia has a record seven World Cup final appearance (1975, 1987, 1996, 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2015) and also have won the World Cup a record five times in total 1987, 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2015. They are like cricket’s Brazil. Among other records they are the first team to play four consecutive World Cup finals (1996, 1999, 2003 and 2007), toppling the old record of three consecutive World Cup final appearances from West Indies (1975, 1979 and 1983) and the first team to win 3 consecutive world cups (1999, 2003 and 2007).

  1. India: 554ravindra-jadeja_ap-m

Surprisingly, in its first fifty years of international cricket, India remained one of the weaker teams in international cricket, winning just 35 of the 196 Test matches they played during this period. However, things have changed since the 1970s with the emergence of superstars like batting legends Sunil Gavaskar and Gundappa Viswanath, all-rounder Kapil Dev and the famous Indian spin quartet – Erapalli Prasanna and Srinivas Venkataraghavan (both off spinners), Bhagwat Chandrasekhar (leg spinner), and the famous Bishen Singh Bedi (left-arm spinner).

Being the much stronger side at home than abroad earlier, the Indian team improved their overseas record since the begining of the 21st century, winning some thrilling Test matches in Australia, England and South Africa. India have two 50-0vers Cricket World Cup, one won in 1983 under the captaincy of Kapil Dev and the second one in 2011 under Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s captaincy.

After winning the 2011 World Cup, India emerged as the third team after West Indies and Australia to win the World Cup more than once, and the first cricket team to win the World Cup at home. With 898 matches in India’s ODI history, they have got 554 ducks.
