Top 5 Most Controversial fights in IPL history – Cricket is hailed as the gentleman’s game, where integrity and respect are significant virtues. Yet, in the boot-up, log-in, twitter generation we find ourselves in, players have often crossed the line. Most recently, the ugly clash between Mitchell Starc and Kieron Pollard added to the long list of Indian Premier League spats, some of which have tended to explode into fights.

And aside from all the entertainment and the drama that the IPL promises, it has definitely had its fair share of controversial fights. The IPL infact is so replete with such ugly incidents that it was a struggle to pick out the Top 5. Nevertheless, we succeeded. Here are SPORTZWIKI’s Top 5 Most Controversial fights in IPL history.

5. Kieron Pollard v/s Shane Watson, IPL 2013.

No Australian has ever shied away from a war of words on the cricket field, and Shane Watson is no different. And Watson was involved in an ugly spat with West Indian all-rounder in last year’s IPL. Pollard started mocking Watson as soon as he came on to bat, and Watson only added fuel to the fire, and soon the two men were exbroiled in a verbal battle.

4. Sourav Ganguly v/s Shane Warne, IPL 2008.

Sourav Ganguly and Shane Warne are two of the greatest competitors in the sport, neither men would spare an inch on the cricket field. But aggression went out of hand when they took on each other in a verbal volley during the inaugral IPL. After Ganguly was caught by Graeme Smith, the then KKR skipper didn’t move an inch, asking the umpire to look at the replay. The third umpire gave the decision in the Prince of Calcutta’s favour, but a fuming Shane Warne got engaged in a hearted argument with Ganguly. And it continued into the post-match press-conference, and trust me, neither men had pleasant words for each other.

3. Virat Kohli v/s Gautam Gambhir, IPL 2013.

Two of India’s best talents in recent times seal the 3rd spot in SPORTZWIKI’s Top 5 Most Controversial fights in IPL history. The incident took place when Virat was caught out, the KKR players started celebrating vehemently. An agitated Virat had a few words to say to the KKR players, and we know that they were undoubtedly obscene and abusive. Virat’s attitude irked Gambhir, who joined in, and soon, two of India’s greatest sons were rehearsing their vocabulary of abuses!

2. SrK v/s Wankhede guards, IPL 2012.

Shah Rukh Khan does like to have a little walk around the stadium to thank the fans for their support. But this time, after KKR overcame Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede stadium, Shah Rukh Khan decided to take the kids and their friends for a victory lap around the stadium, although the MCA have some rule which prohibits entry into the ground after the match is over. Apparently, the security guards behaved rudely with the kids, and SrK decided to get involved in a much-publicised brawl. But despite being banned from the Wankhede, revenge was sweet as Shah Rukh Khan’s team won the IPL that very season!

1. Slapgate, 2008.

At the No.1 position we have the ‘slapegate’ controversy, where the former Kings XI Punjab fast bowler SreeSanth was slapped by Mumbai Indians spinner Harbhajan Singh. Reports suggest that after Punjab won the match, SreeSanth apparently took a dig at his senior India colleague, and Harbhajan, in a fit of anger, is believed to have slapped the speedster. Although the slap managed to escape the eyes of the camera, the visuals of Sreesanth sobbing uncontrollably went viral after the incident.
