Top 5 ODI centuries in a losing cause

Scoring a century and ending on a losing side is probably the worst moment for any player in cricket. The game has witnessed such instances quite a few number of times.

Here are 5 such instances where batsmen scored magnificent tons but still ended on the wrong side of the result:

6. Yusuf Pathan: 105 against South Africa, 2011

Probably one of the best overseas century by an Indian batsman, but unfortunately the knock  went in vain. The knock came in the final match of the five-match ODI series in South Africa in 2011. After posting a total of 250 , South Africa had India in all sorts of trouble as they reduced India to 60 for 5 in the twelfth over.

Coming in to bat at that stage, Pathan changed the face of the game with his brilliant batting. Spinners or pacers – all were sent across the park.  He forged a 100-run ninth wicket stand with Zaheer Khan bringing down the escalating run rate to run-a-ball. But a lofted shot off paceman Morne Morkel ended his 105-run innings that was decorated with eight sixes and an equal number of fours.

3. Sachin Tendulakar: 175 against Australia, 2009

It was a night that broke millions of hearts. The evergreen script of Sachin Tendulkar single-handedly fighting cricketing battles for India was once again on display. Chasing 351 for victory, Tendulkar, who went past 17,000 ODI runs in this match, kept on fighting a lone battle to keep India in the contest.

He and Suresh Raina (59) put on 137 for the fifth wicket but the debutant Aussie pacer Clint McKay struck the all-important blow for Australia when he had Tendulkar caught by Nathan Hauritz.
Sachin smashed 19 fours and 4 sixes in his 141-ball knock. India lost closely by just three runs.

3. Ricky Ponting: 164 against South Africa, 2006

Well this one is hard to believe. Ricky Ponting’s side lost the match even after posting a World record total of 434 runs.

Australia skipper Ricky Ponting produced one of the most sensational one-day innings of all time as Australia powered to a world-record total of 434 for 4 – the first 400-plus score in the game’s history. The right-handed batsman smashed  164 sublime runs from 105 balls, with 13 fours and an astonishing nine sixes. However, his valiant effort was overshadowed by a brutal batting display by South African batsman Herschelle Gibbs.  Chasing such a huge total, South Africa replied positively with Herschelle Gibbs and Graeme Smith combining to put up 187 runs in just over 20 overs for the second wicket. Gibbs continued to smash Australian bowling all round the park after Smith’s exit for 90. Gibbs struck 175 off 111 balls with 21 fours and 7 sixes to take South Africa close. South Africa won with 1 wicket remaining and 1 ball to spare. Gibbs and Ponting were jointly given the Man of the Match award.

2. Mathew Hayden: 181*  against New Zealand, 2007

The Australian opener scored a  brilliant 181 to help his team put up a big total of 346/5 in 50 overs. Hayden smashed 10 sixes and 11 fours in his 166-ball knock. Australian pacers  Shaun Tait and Mitchell Johnson had the hosts wobbling at 41 for 4 in the chase before Craig McMillan and Brendon McCullum scripted an unlikeliest of turnarounds to chase down 346 with three balls to spare, sealing a 3-0 sweep of the Chappell-Hadlee series.

1.Kyle Coetzer: 156 against Bangladesh,2015

The batsman from Scotland scored the highest World Cup score by any batsman from a current non-Test nation. However his brilliant innings of 156 was not enough for Scotland to register its first World Cup win. Defending 318,  Scotland’s inexperienced bowling attack couldn’t reign in the Bangladeshi batsmen and half-centuries from Tamim Iqbal, Mahmudullah, Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib-Al-Hasan helped the tigers overhaul a substantial target with 12 deliveries to spare.
