The Sri Lanka vs India test series is all set to commence from the 12th of August. The series is a highly anticipated one as the two teams have been traditional rivals. Another reason which makes this test series much awaited is that the two Asian giants will play their first test match against each other after 5 years. Only three Indian players from the current squad were a part of that series 5 years ago. The two sides have drastically changed since their previous test clash. Apart from the change in the personnel, there has also been a change in the playing style and mindset.

The two neighbors are sides that are currently under metamorphosis. While India comes to term with the departure of MS Dhoni as the test captain, the Sri Lankans brace themselves to enter an era without the legendary duo of Jayawardene and Sangakkara.

Traditionally, the test matches between the two sides have been dominated just by the batsmen. Viewers have seen numerous tests between these teams, when mammoth totals have been scaled. The most significant reason for that has been the nature of wickets. Pitches in both the nations have been a boon for the batsmen. Secondly, the quality of batsmen produced by the two Asian neighbors has been unparalleled. Thus, it is only fair, to mention the most successful batsmen from this rivalry.

In this article, we glance through the top 5 run scorers in test matches played between India and Sri Lanka –

5. Aravinda de Silva:

De Sliva, known as the classiest Sri Lankan batsman of all time enjoyed playing against India. De Silva featured in 19 test matches against India and has a total of 1252 runs at an average of 41.73. The elegant right hander also has five centuries against the Indians and his best score against them is 148.

4. Kumar Sangakkara:

Sangakkara is considered among the greatest batsmen of all time, as in the years gone by, he has simply plundered runs against all oppositions. Sangakkara had a particular liking for the Indian bowlers, as he made 1257 runs against them in 15 test matches. Sangakkara averaged 57.13 against the Indians and also has 5 tons to his name. Considering his current form, expect that century count to go to 6 or even 7!

3. Rahul Dravid:

There were hardly any bowlers who could dismantle the enigma of Rahul Dravid. The theory applied to the Sri Lankan bowlers as well, who were all at sea against the run making ability of Rahul Dravid. Dravid in 20 test matches aggregated 1508 runs against Sri Lanka, at an average of 48.64. The batting legend also had 3 centuries against Sri Lanka, with a best score of 177.

2. Mahela Jayawardene:

Jayawardene burst on to the international scene against India. From that moment till the end of his career, he always loved facing the Indian bowlers. The graceful right hander scored 1822 runs against India, at a jaw dropping average of 67.48, with 4 tons to his name. That includes a best score of 274, which he made at Ahmedabad.

1. Sachin Tendulkar:

Topping another run chart is cricket’s very own blessed child, Sachin Tendulkar! Undoubtedly the greatest batsman of all time, Tendulkar took a special liking towards the Sri Lankan bowlers, who seemed completely helpless against his ever increasing charisma. Tendulkar had 1995 runs against Sri Lanka, at an average of 60.45. But the icing on the cake is the number of centuries, which stands at 9. Tendulkar simply dominated the Sri Lankans, and the numbers too suggest that.
